Friday afternoon at GM for the office team means only one thing. Slightly silly games, one favourite being "What if...?"

I've justed asked James Mason just (H/Cap 5ish but has been lower)...if you could place your ball on the fairway on every par 4 and 5, then play on as normal (par 3 you have to tee off as normal), could you win the Open.

James, aka Jim, not short of confidence, says yes. Please feel free to slate Jim, I still reckon he'd get beaten...comfortably.

Terms and conditions: Fairway ball placement no longer than 290 yards. Excludes par 3s.

Absolutely not a chance these guys are so good on and around the greens they would destroy me, I would not get within 20 shots of winning the open even placing the ball on the fairway. Just think about were the average golfer drops there shots most (85%) will be around the greens.

Weston! What planet are you from? What about a 36-handicapper, they get to place their ball on the fairway and then duff into the rough?

You could start with a ten-shot lead and still get beaten by ten. Tell Mason to stop dreaming.

I deffo would fancy myself Alex.

As Tiger has said, hit the fairways and your in with a chance. I would put my putting stoke up against those greens, not sure about my chipping, but as I said, I fancy my chances.

James Mason

Not a chance. Has James been sampling the local grog??? The top pros will out play any mortal around the greens and the pin positions will crucify most players even playing from every fairway. Add in penal rough and the bunkers plus the speed of the greens and I'd be surprised if anyone broke 75

Not a chance. But if I could drop at 290 down every hole, I could beat my h'cap....probably :)

hmm, then again.... :D

Playing off 5 you would not get anywhere near and I mean nowhere not within 25 shots

Are you sure. Sounds pessimistic to me.

Depends on the winning score I guess. If it's 5 under say, you'd need to play to 20 over for 4 rounds.....

Oh yeh, I see where you're coming from....that IS a 5 handicap!

I knew I shouldn't have gone to the pub at 7.00pm

Over one hole we might have a small chance but over 72 forget it. The pros are so consitant and skillful around and on the greens, we will be lucky to be within 20 shots.

I wreckon so, I hit most fairways at Turnberry anyway and my G.I.R's aint so shabby neither..... What ya mean Tiger woods 10 doesn't count? :D

Similar question to the one about playing Augusta the day after the Masters and what score would you shoot. there was some deluded people answering that one with 80-85 LOL.

Lets be real here and admit we wouldnt have a cat in hells chance to get anywhere near it. If you put us in the fairway on our own courses the great majority (99%) still wouldnt shoot level par let alone playing a monster like Turnberry with the wind blowing and all the pressures that go with it. All you usually get on these forums is "I 3 putted 4 times today , If only I could get up and down , My short game let me down badly today" etc etc Who are we trying to kid ;)

It's one of the most stupid questions you've ever asked...

I agree...............of course I'd win :D.........with mulligans, gimmies etc etc
