Just after a bit of help. SWMBO and I are taking a week off at the end of June. We'd quite like to head up to Scotland for a week and stay in a nice little cottage somewhere and do a bit of exploring.

She's never even been to Scotland before and my time up there has been spent either in Edinburgh, Aberdeen or Glasgow on the pop or golfing around Carnoustie, Turnberry and Dalmahoy.

So I'm up for somewhere I've never been before.

Really quite open to suggestions as to where to stay but was thinking the West Coast would probably be favourite.

Requirements would be:

  • Spectacular Scenery
  • Decent Food (Preferably Seafood)
  • Pub

Of course, if there was a half decent golf course nearby then that might help.

Anyone got any suggestions as to where I should be looking? :)

There was a post on another thread that mentioned Arisaig on the west coast. Haven't stayed there myself but played golf at Traigh just nearby and the coast is spectacular with views over to Skye. Also, consider Skye itself. If you like mountains, walking etc then there's nowhere better. Stunning and planty of other stuff to do too.

Gairloch is a nice spot, the road in alongside Loch Maree with views of Slioch mountain is great. Stop at Achansheen cafe for a coffee.

Ullapool is good, bigger place with good couple of pubs, can be a bit touristy but the scenery a short drive north and west towards Achnahaird going past Stac Pollaidh is excellent.

The drive from Gairloch up to Ullapool which goes by An Teallach mountain is Highland scenery at its best.

That's it. That's all there is up there. You've seen it all.
Sorry, tell a lie. There's a few peat farms away up North that call themselves Inverness. :D

Torridon, is pretty hard to beat. And as mentioned in another post Gairloch is pretty impressive, the drive to get there is stunning. The old bridge inn did fantastic seafood the last time i was there.

Stop looking now- if theres one place that is idyllic to take your wife who's never been to Scotland before its Plockton, if your driving go the west coast route for stunning scenery and a taste of Scotland, but Plockton is like Brigadoon, you go over a small track to a gorgeous village in a Bay with stunning views and Palm trees as they are beside the gulf stream. You'll both feel at home as its predominantly English who live there now full time, artists, poets and retired....
its only a short trip to Skye as well for the day....

However, there are LOADS of excellent places like the George hotel in Inverary http://www.thegeorgehotel.co.uk/

If you are afraid of local Scots, it is not just Plockton that is full of English people living up here.
Most of rural Scotland has a high density of resident English.
I remember, on this subject, a small island in Orkney where there was a scare re a 'pedos' ring and all children were taken into care as a precaution - it turned out to be a false alarm but the interesting thing was that this very isolated island had only ONE Scot thereon - the minister! So you lot are everywhere!!

Anyway another vote for Gairloch.

Thanks for all the input, guys. Much appreciated.

Settled on Arisaig and a place recommended by The Craw.

Roll on a round of golf or two at Traigh.

:D
