My daughter is BA cabin crew and flies there regularly. She says it's a fantastic destination.
Its a few years since we went, but we loved it - even if we did arrive in some of the worst weather the country had seen in years. Effectively you'd be going to see scenery & wildlife. It was particularly impressive with the variety of birds - half out party were fairly avid birders. (I was content to just divide the birds into four main groups - big ones, little ones, brown ones and pretty ones). Stayed on the Caribbean coast at Tortuguero in the Tortuguero National Park. Didnt see the turtles, but the jungle, rivers, lagoons & canal were fascinating. Then moved inland to La Fortuna near Arenal (the volcano). You take pot luck as to how active the volcano is at the time of your visit. Not very when we were there but impressive nonetheless. (Believe it's one of the most active volcanoes in the world?) . Then a couple of days spent at Monteverde - a very lush area in the cloud forest. And finally a few days at a beach resort on the Pacific coast. Cant remember the name of the place, but it was quiet and not overly developed (ie only small & no high rise etc). I spent most of the time there watching the pelicans diving into the sea, and trying to get the perfect picture as one just hit the water. Doubt the place has changed a lot since
Thoroughly enjoyed the trip and recommend going. But unless you are really, really into birds, then it's probably just a "one visit" country. There's too many other places in the world that also need to be seen.
