Hi guys,

Over the last 2 years or so I have really knuckled down to my game and began shaving some serious shots from my rounds. I am no longer a member anywhere and consequently do not really keep on top of my handicap but I'm playing from around the 9 mark to give you an idea of where I am at. Now the one thing that let me down late last year and through the first few months of this year was inconsistency with the driver. My iron play was great and my short game has been the largest area of improvement. Now the driving is starting to come together a little bit but I am still not 100% happy. I wondered if anyone had any good training drills for the driving range or just some good advice for getting my head right before the shot that might aid my drives. Also, I am using a draw bias on my driver and 3 wood and I am not sure that it is such a great idea. I wondered if the change in offset between my irons/rescue and my 3 wood/driver could be causing some of the inconsistency?

TIA
Mick

When I go to the range I will pick out some markers to form a mock fairway and then hit 15 balls (assuming you would have a max of 15 drives per round) and usually make at least 13. However I would say per round i'm nearer to 7 fairways if the driver comes out 15 times. Although when I do miss it's usually by just a few feet.

When my game and swing is in good nick, I practice hitting to the 150 marker with 9/7/5 irons. The plan is to keep the ball within 10 yards either side, the 5 irons obviously fly straight over. I try deliberate draws and fades as well.
As for long clubs, I imagine the 10 yard width extending to maybe 15 either side and try to not be outside that.

Sounds like you are practicing with a purpose with your driver which is good. If you are hitting it ok on the course as well as the range my advice would be to focus on the short game as this is where the shots will be saved. I've worked really hard on my putting lately and its working a treat and I'm holing so many more 5-10 footers to save par. My chipping is still woeful but its a work in progress.

Cheers for the replies fellas. My short game is very good, I'm more than happy although I'll never be totally satisfied haha. I do hit the occasional bad 6,7,8 iron but not too often if I could just make 75-80% of fairways I think I'd be able to consistently break 80 which is this years target :)

Which part of your driving is not consistant? Have you got a bad shot that keeps creeping up?

Have you got a pre-shot routine for your driver? It can really help to get your mind set for the shot ahead.

regards...

That's something I have thought actually. I can start to rush shots a bit or try to force something to happen rather than just playing my game. If anything tho, when it goes wrong I have a light slice.
