I just wondered what happens at other clubs?

A bogey comp started today, and the rain set in when we reached the turn. By the 16th we had an instance of having to take relief from water on the green but there were lines without casual water, probably half the morning starters either finished their round or some walked in.

A little later the asst pro rang the manager as some holes were unplayable and he agreed to abandon the comp. A little while later the rain pretty well stopped and, given our greens are like upturned saucers, I'm fairly sure they we're okay and play could have resumed. I've no complaint that the comp was halted but just wonder if this was a correct decision and do clubs normally abandon comps when quite a few players have finished and signed their cards?

If a course becomes unplayable, and suspension isn't either a practicality or a definitive solution (ie you know it's only temporary at the time) then abandoning the competition makes the most sense.

Best guidelines I've seen written out are on the SGU's website (somewhere!)

I think that's why the decision was made Duncan - too difficult to manage the potential to bring players in temporarily

They say only one person can abandon our comps. Anyway turned up last sun pouring down with rain greens water logged and tbh everyone knew short downpours then glorious weather was coming so really comp should have been postponed. The green staff came in first thing half 7 said competitions off. So we sat around and about 8:15 water starting draining and was sunny. We decided we would have a roll up and go out when one of the committee turned up for his tee time and said comp still on no one can call comps off other than himself. So out we went in the comp. turned out a great day but the point is instead of calling the comp off to just delay it. The problem is like you say what do you do when your out on the course? No one tbh is gonna come in wait around and then go back out an hour later if it gets better.

Our comp was abandoned yesterday and will be rescheduled.

But at my previous club, someone would drive out , tell everyone to mark their ball or play out that hole and return to the clubhouse and wait for restart.

good to know there is still idiots about around golf clubs whose self importance knows no boundaries!

And he should definitely not be a participant in the competition! If he is, then he should pass the 'abandonment authority/responsibility' to an another appropriate member of 'The Committee'.

There are, however, good reasons why it should be 1 and not 'one of several folk' who have the authority on any day!

What happens to any completed rounds? Should they still be used for handicap?

A comp at my club has had to be abandoned a couple of times due to lightening etc.

For those who have completed their round they can be cut against SSS. I think that the comp is reduction only so no +0.1.

18.7 If a Qualifying Competition is abandoned for any valid reason, the Competition Scratch Score shall be regarded as equal to the Standard Scratch Score and players returning Nett Differentials of less than zero shall have their Exact Handicaps reduced to the extent dictated by the Nett Differential. A Nett Differential of zero or above shall not result in a handicap increase.

My friend who was playing with me, finished +4 so should expect a nice little cut then!

We had this over the weekend

Our club championships played over our 2 courses, 1st round play on Saturday

We were one of the 1st pairs out at 8.10 yesterday got to the 7th when play was abandoned, our scores were cancelled and second part will be played in early Sept 1st available Sunday

Not so bad for me as I did'nt do very well, however my PP was playing well

What happens to the 2's Club as this is separate from the Comp??

Difficulty this time of the year is light. If you suspend there is little chance of everyone finishin. Also lack of green staff at a weekend maximises delay.

Can't remember. The pro runs the 2s. I would be happy if they just put it on my account.
At our place if the comp is called off or no one gets one, it's rolled over to the corresponding day the next week.
