Come on Golf Monthly you can do better than this clickbait nonsense

I take it you’re suggesting that because people are talking about it, it’s gaining attention which is only a ‘good thing’ as it raises the profile of said publication — “there is no such thing as bad publicity” etc?

Totally disagree with that fallacy
Unfortunately it's quantity (of clicks) over quality these days. If they get x number of clicks on the article, they don't give a toss what people's reactions to it are. It's poor, but that's how it is in 2025.

I could hand-pick five people off this forum that could write a better article than their so called 'writers'.

Marketing 1-0-1

Yes people are talking about , it’s gaining conversations

That’s the whole point
You think I haven’t heard - nor can’t comprehend that?

Such an overly simplistic and absolutely myopic point of view…

I suppose the recent Jaguar campaign was a masterpiece of marketing and advertising was it?
And Gerald Ratner infamous remarks was a piece of marketing genius was it?

Getting people talking about you is ‘not the whole point’ if it is solely widespread criticism 👏🏻🙄

I'm sure Elon musk was in the news recently, I wonder if that was good publicity for his Tesla brand 😬😬

Going a little ott perhaps

It’s someone’s personal view

Its creating people talking about the view on social media ( both here and on other platforms)

So its done whah the article wanted to do

Are people going to stop going to their website because of that article ? Doubt it - maybe create more traffic

Didn’t Ben Hogan lobby the PGA to do the same in his later years (when he did get the yips)?

Came here to say this......Hogan is considered one of the greatest ball strikers of all time but he argued that putting was essentially a separate game from the rest of golf!!

It’s “..the least golf-like thing about golf”. Utter tosh, piffle and balderdash..because since the objective of the game is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest shots, then putting is the MOST ‘golf-like’ think of the game….whatever golf is supposed to be like in any case.

Yes..pure and stupid ‘click-bait’.

At what point do you stop breaking it down though?
Driving is a different game to chipping. Bunker play is a different game to 150 approach play…

It’s all just part of the game of golf.

What’s next, half a goal for a penalty?

Wait, might be on to something there…

Totally agree, that’s why golf is so difficult.

Was just pointing out that calling someone an idiot for writing an article with the basic idea that Ben Hogan advocated is a bit harsh…

I get that. When someone really famous for something provides an opinion it does cause us mere mortals to sit up and pay attention.

But, and it's a big but... Even the best of us, the wisest, the best in class, the smartest of us all, even they have brain farts now and again and spout some utter gash.

Even Mr Hogan I presume.

The most used keys on a keyboard in order are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, R, H, L.

On Arthur's keyboard it is Carriage Return, E, T, A, O, I, N, S, R, H, L.

:ROFLMAO:

I like Arthur’s style…

…makes posts a lot easier to read if they are broken up…

…with an occasional blank line.

As has been mentioned earlier, it is all about clicks. Long term there is certainly an argument that it might not work but in the short term it almost certainly will.

I would say the Jaguar thing is very different to putting out clickbait articles, seeing as that was such an intensive rebrand. This is more of a change of tactics in how to get people to click on their articles.

As also mentioned earlier, NCG have been doing this clickbait stuff for a long, long time. In the end, I unsubscribed from their emails because it did my head in. Which again ties into the question of whether this is a good or bad long term strategy.
