Club Staff having free golf?

Maybe it’s a sign of modern society where there is expectation of “perks” and “benefits” of jobs to add onto a wage that they get paid

Our staff get discounted food and drinks and able to use all the club house facilities

Anyone who wants to play golf at the club joins the club
Wrong way round.
An employer who doesn't offer their staff a perk which costs literally nothing but which is worth £1000-£2000 per year, might improve quality of work and reduce staff turnover is an idiot.

Totally agree.
It’s basically giving them a nice bonus without actually costing you anything other than the odd green fee that they’re taking.

Guess it depends on what the job is but there are people that will be paid less having to pay that £1000-2000 a year

We have waged staff working in the office and the bar and longer hours - should they get the same perks

They all also get yearly bonuses etc

Our captains don’t pay for the year they are captain. Do you think this is right or not?

I didn’t pay for membership during my year as captain… think the fees were £650 that year. However, there was no budget for expenses, inc. paying for the Captain’s day prizes & entertainment.

The finance committee asked me to keep a spreadsheet of what the year cost me, about 20 years ago, so that they could consider putting an expense budget in place for future captains. It came out at just under £4,000.

When you say they get to use the facilities in the club house, do you mean the toilet? Probably fair they should be able to use that whilst at work.

I’d say most good employers offer benefits that only they can offer. I work for a manufacturing company in a sport I’ve been involved with my whole life, I get equipment at cost….thats a big benefit for me but doesn’t cost the company much.

They can use the concrete toilet around the back with no heating 🥶

They get a card that’s the same as social membership which allows them the discount behind the bar and with the catering

Not read all the replies but assume we are talking about the casual/non managerial staff here…or does everyone have to pay?

Having worked in a golf club for summer jobs in my youth, I can reinforce that it’s a bit of a thankless task most of the time so any opportunity to integrate into the club with reduced fees or incentives to play would really be a welcome addition to the employment package - may even generate more loyalty. Obviously this will not be for everyone so it shouldn’t be a freebie imo as it would disadvantage those not playing golf.

Head greenkeeper is a full member, HI 5.6
Enters club comps, plays in matches etc.
I don't know what the financial arrangement is - but if he is happy with it, then that is what matters.
I simply feel it is wonderful to have someone who wants the same thing from the course as I do and he devotes his life to it.

Head pro and 2nd pro are very active in running the comps.
2nd pro and another member have just won the County Pro/Am foursomes knockout.
Head pro won it some years ago. Head pro is a full member of the H&C committee.
Either or both can attend Captain's away days and the like.
Neither gets much time to play our course. If not in the shop, giving lessons, earning a living etc, I imagine they have lives away from the course.
They do have the fairly rare social game - can't see any point in charging them for this - but I don't know what the arrangement is.
If it completely free - that's OK with me.

The green keepers must love you Phil 😬

Or do you only share these thoughts on social media?
