I've just had an interesting email through from my club.
Seems this year we are to hold a one-off "Ryder Cup" style comp in early September.
The premise is that it will be a team of members who live in the county versus a team of those who live outside of it (and Clackmannan is a SMALL county :D).
Qulaification will be based on "order of merit" points picked up in handicap competitions through the year with the teams comprising 10 gents, 4 women and 2 juniors.
8 foursomes and 8 four balls on the Saturday and then 16 singles on the Sunday.

I think this is a fantastic idea and should be huge fun on the days but also the run up to qualify.

Has anyone else's club done similar, what so you reckon?

Cheers
Greig

I've seen something similar at a local club where the juniors had a mini Ryder Cup around the par 3 course. All dressed in the same colours playing for their team. Looked like great fun!

Interesting idea. My club's name (Malton & Norton GC) includes two towns, either side of the River Derwent that runs between them. The local rugby club have a Malton v Norton match at Christmas each year. Maybe the Golf Club could consider something similar but I won't suggest it as I've been a member mess than a year!

Sounds great, if both teams are evenly matched could be a great weekend. Can imagine it being a bit of an anti climax if its one sided an nearly all over on the first day though.

Our annual 2nd team (h/c 6-12) vs 3rd team (h/c 12-18) match has a kind of Ryder Cup feel. Just 4BB over one day but all kinds of banter in the lead up and bragging rights for the year. Brilliant post event dinner too. A few guys move between teams each year so can be a laugh (and a bit odd) being on one team one year and the other team the next. 2nd team won the trophy for about the first 10 years then we switched to full h/c and it's been a lot more even.

I've had another mail saying more detail to follow about Handicap Classes for the teams so they must be thinking the same.
Also a dinner being put on for the Sunday after the singles.
As you said Mashie, no real treasures up for grabs just the bragging rights... Isn't that what it's about though? lol

My club did this last season. To enter the qualifying you paid a fiver at the start of the season, then points were awarded for every weekend qualifying competition throughout the season with the top 8 in each of the 4 divisions qualifying to play in the " mini ryder cup ".
The Friday night was a buffet and dance for the players and partners.
Saturday morning all the players ate breakfast together. Then it was 4 ball better ball in the morning followed by soup and sandwiches, then foursomes in the afternoon.
Sunday was singles day followed by a meal and presentation of the cup to the winning team.
All matches were drawn by handicap so every game was off the bare feet.
We were all also given team uniforms of an Adidas polo shirt and waterproof top.

All of the above apart from drinks and the initial fiver entry was free.

It was the best weekend's golf I've ever had. Superb!!

That sounds cracking!!! I'm thinking a club could maybe also run it as an over 40s V under 40s thing to.

I've playing in a Ryder Cup style event which is North v South ran by another forum I frequent. Should be a great weekend.

we have all kinds of special comps from liverpool v everton ( and yes you can wear footy tops ) and the st helens v wigan game this is normally a boustras affair, but we do have inter club games and this is based on the order of merit table, but this year we are having a champion of champions comp ( i was fortunate to win a board comp so i'm in )that is going to run along the lines of a pro comp as there is only 16 playing it will be a 36 hole comp with a gala dinner on the evening,we will have caddies and a large scoreboard at the club house so should be a good day, plenty of prizes on offer and a couple of big sponsors from the golfing world have donated, things like this help clubs and bring the social members and playing members together and makes a fun enjoyable day.
