Well, I played my qf today and was pretty worried as the fella is a fellow ulster cup member, so knew I was in for a tough time, I also play in the same fourball on a saturday with him, very tenacious player.
Anyway, I was 2 down through 2, and looking a bit worse for wear, but got it back to be 1up at the turn. Managed to win 10 even though I put my tee shot in the water, and was now feeling pretty happy. Giving away a shot at 11 and then back to 1, but went to 3 up with 4 to play, then the wheels came off, not sure why, but just had a mental feck up. Lost 3 in a row to be as on 18th tee, hit what looked like a super drive but ended in the bunker on right handside of the fairway, while my opponant was middle fairway, hit a bad 8 iron to leave 200+ yards(par 5 550 yard finish hole) and I am think game over, as it happens we both end up on green for 4, he missed, I missed, he missed, I made!! Ok, so bogey to win aint great, but I am very grateful for my bit fortune, I really should have wrapped it up early but didn't and then felt like I didnt deserve to win it, but pleased I have.
The semi will be very tough though, dont think I have much hope but I am just going to enjoy it when it comes round.

Well done James. Sounds quite stressful though! You were just trying to make it interesting weren't you? :D

Got my singles s/f this Sunday, and I really fancy my chances (famous last words!)

Seems quite a few on here doing well in matchplay this year :)

Well done James , cutting it a bit fine there mate ;)

I too have reached our singles final and have to give 11 shots away in the final

Try not to get negative about it though , I see you've already posted that you think you'll lose and it will be very very tough. Train your mind between now and then to expect victory and think only positive thoughts and you'll be surprised at the results.

thanks folks i am really looking forward to it. I want to enjoy the match and have fun. If i play well i have every chance. Good look in your matches too, hopefully we'll get i few winners on here:)

Well done James, I played my QF last Sunday night everything was going my way (4 up through 11) then he hit me with 3 birdies on the trot. All square with 3 to play. I birded 16 then parred 17 to win 2 & 1. A win is a win no matter how we get them. Simi final tomorrow morning at 9 so hopefully the weather is good. This is the 1st year we have run a scratch match-play so it would be lovely to win it.

Let us know how you get on james.

which club u play at?

Well played James.

Good luck in your next round, be positive and take it a shot at a time.

I've entered ours this year and have reached the 1/4's which i play on saturday morning. I've really enjoyed it - had never played matchplay before this year. I have to give 8 or 9 shots though so im expecting a tough match!!

i play at galgorm castle mate. Good luck tomorrow morning. Not arranged my semi yet thinking maybe next week but have a chance to play royal portrush so prob do that instead. Don't worry about givin shots away, i had to give 9 away in the round before and was 4 up at the turn after losing the first. The fella conceded on the 9th green so was happy days:)

Well done mate although I don't buy into this S/F will be tough bit. Its all about the day and if you get shots and play well you'll be tough to beat. If you go out in awe of the bloke and don't play your own game you'll be down before you know it. He might even have a bad day and gift you a few holes. Go out and believe in yourself and if you come back to the 19th knowing you've given everything it doesn't matter if you win or lose

Thanks Homer, I was just looking at the draw, and the 2 lads I could play, one plays of 2(1.8) now but is only maybe 16/17, no fear, plays for gc in the belfast and district cup, doesnt work and so just plays all the time! came down from 6 at the start of the season, hence the worry, I realise if I play well I will be tough to beat, just daunting, this is the farthest I have got in the singles.
:)

I won my match this morning on the 18th green. A slight problem on the 18th though. The guy hit his 2nd shot onto an old hole where a tree had been removed from. I played 2 horrid shots and was still short in 3. He waited to see where I hit my 4th shot to, then asked me for a free drop. I told him the rules of the game were if it aint marked GUR then there was no drop. He wasn't to happy. He didnt hit a great 3rd shot, then 2 putted for 5. I had a 4 footer for the match which I slid in, thankfully. It was a great game He was 2 up after 6 I was 3 up after 12. I was 1 up with 3 to go and that's the way it finished...........

Hmmmmm, not sure that was right CC!!??

A hole made by a greenkeeper is GUR even if not marked, Decison 25/14.

That's how i read it anyway, happy to be corrected by other interpretations??

I have asked since and have been informed that I was right not to give him the free drop.
When I say a hole, I mean it was leveled off with seed, soil and sand thrown on it to re-grow. Everyone I asked agreed with me that it should of been marked GUR.
I don't mean like a hole 1" deep.

He addmitted the only reason he asked for a free drop, was because I had hit my 4th shot to 4 feet. If I had messed it up he would of just played from where it was.

Before you all get the rule books out, if the shoe had off been on the other foot, there is no way he would of given me a free drop.

You have an R&A guy in your club.......cool club!! :D

That doesn't make it right either :D

Definition: GUR
“Ground under repair” is any part of the course so marked by order of the Committee or so declared by its authorised representative........Ground under repair includes material piled for removal and a hole made by a greenkeeper, even if not so marked . ........

Decision 25/14:
Q, What constitutes a “hole made by a greenkeeper”?

A, A “hole made by a greenkeeper” is usually ground temporarily dug up in connection with course maintenance, such as a hole made in removing turf or a tree stump, laying pipelines, etc.

I'd have argued my corner if I was wanting that free drop :D

Done now though, as it was matchplay and the result agreed on.

Maybe me useing the word "hole" wasn't correct.

The tree has been away from there for a few months now, the green-keepers have relaid the place left by the tree with sand, soil and seed, some of which has grown.

It has left a bad taste in the game but we've been friends since junior's and I damn well know he would NOT of given me a free drop.

Well done James for reaching the semi's. Like a few others have said, think positive and play well and who knows how things might turn out. The only thing you can control is your own game so give it everything and good luck! :)
