Decided to knock the package set idea on the head following my previous post. May as well spend a bit more money and get some decent clubs :). I have done some research and come up with a shortlist of irons under the £250 mark, mainly last years models to save on cash. I would like to wittle it down to 2 or 3 to try out at local golf shop.

What would your recommendation for a newish golfer be if it was your hard earned? I would like to keep the clubs for a couple of years.

Shortlist:

Mizuno MX-17 (£170)
Mizuno MX-19 (£200)
Mizuno MX-100 (£250)
King Cobra FP II (£170)
TaylorMade R7 (£250)
Cleveland CG Red (£180)
Nike Slingshot 4d (£200)
Cleveland HiBore Hybrids (£190)
Callaway x-20 (2nd hand-Did you get my PM Homer?)

Looking forward again to your opinions :D

I'm a callaway man myself irons wise. Got big berthas but used X20's many a time. Very good clubs. However there seems to be a lot of people who love their 'Mizzys' (mizunos). I would advise you to wittle it down to 3 or 4 then try them out.

Nice 'long' list there. As suggested whittle it down to a few and go and hit 'em.

You'll get all the pros and cons for and against each set. Though only you will be able to tell for certain.

But seeing as you're asking. The MX19s get my vote. But it'll be interesting to see what they're like against the 100s though. I think that you can pick up the MX19s for as little as £150 now.

I've got callaway big berthas which I'd highly recommend if you are just starting out! They've served me well but I'm now looking at getting fitted for the X-22's! Dont think you'll go wrong with the callaways! (but I'm biased!) :D :D(see below)

Not seen them as cheap as that! If I could get them for £150 then they would probably be at the top of my list. Have you seen them anywhere for that?

The video review below compares the mx-100 against the mx-19 and the PGA seems impressed with them. Just at the top end of my budget though.

My good lady bought me a new set of irons for my b-day last year, took me to the range told me to pick whatever irons I wanted. Tried loads price range up to £500 but ended up with Mizuno Mx-19's custom fitted for £279 all in. Still love them!

If it was me, I'd go for the Cobra. I've seen them and hit them. I'm not a big fan of the lower-end Mizunos.

I’m a big Mizuno fan myself. First decent set I had were MX 17s. Great clubs easy to hit very forgiving and would recommend them to anyone, plus I’ve seen them for sale new for £150 or less.

I would try a few different makes and see which one’s work best for you.

Happy hitting
