Club closing - change ahead

I see from the club website that the Riverside course is closed. Is this because its flooded or have they closed it for good earlier than the 31st March date?

Heard of 2 closing up,here last weekend.

How many members did you have last year?? 1100 is a fairly substantial membership base is it not?

Tongo - Riverside is generally closed this time of year anyway as it floods. So no different to any other year. We were of the opinion that it wouldn't reopen anyway once the first floods came, so we played our farewell round on it some time ago fully expecting it to be our last. It's not officially closed, but we don't expect it to reopen.

Homer - Some clubs have done very well out of it, accepting over a hundred members - existing members not happy there, some have jumped ship. Others have been very choosy about who they take (young low handicappers have done well out of it.)

5 weeks to go, big comp Easter Monday, and day off on the 31st March on a day that has been declared no guests.

I'm really excited about moving to a new challenge.

Where are you moving to Canfordhacker?

The trouble is, that building houses on golf courses is so profitable that there is hardly a club in the land that would not generate more cash by selling up and building over it.

Planning permission is always negotiable with local politicians.

In fact, the madness of our current economy is that pretty much the only thing that makes money apart from financial jiggery-pokery is importing people and building houses to put them in. Not such a healthy model for a happy and sustainable economic and social future.

E.g. Fleming Park, Botley Park, Basingstoke (very probably)

Fleming Park's just a bit of wasteland though. Been vacant since 2008. Not even sure what the plan is there.

Houses are certainly in the offing for BP though i believe.

Fleming park won't be built on, plans to keep it as green land. Eastleigh borough council have plans for quite a few things, like bike trails etc

Very sad all these clubs closing up and down the country and will be very difficult for members who in many cases base there intire social lives at a golf club.A few years back the sister club to my place Reymerstone GC closed its gates for good, hard to imagine now all those beautiful holes have been turned over to farm land and many of the long term members just gave up the game saying it wouldnt be the same playing elsewhere.Moneys being spent refurbishing our place by its new owners but alreadys theres price increases and people are leaving, ive been playing there a long time now and to lose it would be unthinkable....
