We all like to try out new clubs or test whats new on the market. But does this effect the consistency we have with our own set and therefore have a knock-on effect to how well we play???

I was talking to some golfing buddys the other day one of whom spends lots of money on the latest equipment always changing this and that trying to get more consistancy.
I asked him how much did he think a certain player at our club has spent on equipment in the last couple of years.
He was surprised when i told him absolutly nothing he has a 905R driver, three wood and a set of old mizzy blades and plays off Scr.
And so i ask myself are the low single figure guys happy to stick with equipment for far longer than us "aspiring" golfers and concentrate on lessons and coaching, as it seems nearly all of them at my club do not tend to change their clubs anywhere near as often as us double digit people.

Is it because these guys are soo good they know it's not the clubs that will make them better anymore, it's more a case of refining thier technique?

It takes time, luck, trial, error and a bit of knowledge to find a set that you like. But once you do they become an extension of you, that's why you see even the top pros with an old favourite in the bag still and they have the access to all the latest and greatest equipment out there (as well as stuff that isn't available to us).
Just by changing to the latest club is not the answer to curing that slice/ hook/ duff/ top/ sky/ shank/ thin/ fat/ despite what it says on the tin!!

How come even when you have the clubs of your dreams you still always see an iron you prefer the look of????
I played with a guy at Whittington Heath earlier this year. 11 handicapper, hit the ball like God. He was playing with some Adams irons. Don't know exactly which model they were, but they sure did look sexy. With one of those in your hands you just knew you were going to muller the ball.

I'm probably more guilty than most on having tried a number of different clubs in the last few years. I thought I'd got the bag set until I tried the R9's but they are performing really well for me and I'm sure will help me achieve my aim to get to single figures (9.4 would do me).
I don't think my 3 and 5 woods are quite right for me but I'm happy with my driver, my wedge set up (switching to 52, 56 and 60 in the summer and dropping the 3 wood) and have a putter I'm happy (ish) with and a good standby (itsy spider). I finally think my bag is as good as it will get now and its down to application, practice and determination

Am the worlds worst for it at times always chasing some thing new and shiny always drivers never really irons. Until tis year managed to get to 9 with my Ap2's then decided to change and got X22 Tours handicap has went up 0.7 to 10 ,still getting used to them (my excuse) in reality should have kept my AP2's as they were a great club ,oh well might get the new ones when they come out
I really wanted to take the next step and get proper irons (TM TP's, R9 TPS, AP2's I15's - which I loved, X22 tours etc). However having tried a load of these and with the exception of the I15s which I smoked I was more consistant with a slighthy more forgiving set. The R9's are new shiny and have enough in them for me to keep them and be able to use them well enough to get down.
I tried the TM TP's at a demo day and they were horrid. The R9 TP's are a much heavier KBS shaft (113g against 95g on the ordinary model) and to be honest it was a toss up between I15, X22 pros and the standard R9. I could hit everything in the I15 range (up to and including 3 iron) but I guess it came down to the newness of the R9, the fact I could have them a week before official release and at heart I'm a TM whore!!!

I've noticed a difference in my play with the clubs I have already changed from the original package set I had.
Irons will be getting changed by the end of 2009 then next year I will have no (equipment) excuses to use for bad rounds/shots...
I expect to lose 10 shots per round when I have my new irons...

That is an awful lot of shots, and an awful lot of expectations.
Even if your package set is dire, I can't see you making up 10 shots a round, just by changing clubs.

I 'expect' to, not going to happen though!!!
My expectations around my game are usually massive and I am yet to live up to them.
Got to get a few lessons and pracace a lot more if I am going to be the player I want to be.
