City break recommendations

Probably won't be having a proper holiday this year so looking at a city break or two with the mrs. Quite fancy Rome or Istanbul, maybe Reykjavic later in the year. Any other good recommendations aside from the obvious popular choices?
What do you call a proper holiday?

Try getting diverted to Norway, to trips in a row for work, cost me a bomb ??
I'd taken 2 flights, a train journey and a 20 minute walk to get to my hotel. I walked to the bar, ordered a pint, it was around £10. Deep breath, accept the pain, got on with drinking it. I didn't have a second mind ?. I get the impression Norway is even scarier ?

Copenhagen eating at the various Michelin Starred restaurants

A dream trip to me

I put Cities in two categories.

Big, London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon, Budapest, Berlin etc. These you will not do in a weekend

Bit smaller.
Bruges, Brussels, Venice, Milan, Porto, Krakow, Gdańsk, Amsterdam, Prague, Pisa, Florence, Talin, Riga. These you could do in a weekend.
Having spoken to Missis T Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna, deffo Venice would be a consideration. I was in Gdańsk in November. For obvious reasons I would give Eastern Europe a miss at the moment.

Cities are very much a personal choice but Venice is so different to any other.

Edit, Missis T did Saltsburg with some girls and preferred it to Vienna and I loved Vienna.

I think I was there for 5 days and found it hugely disappointing.
I ate out each night, including a couple of expensive restaurants (can't remember if they were Michelin starred). I've eaten better pub meals in the UK recently for under a tenner.
The city was interesting during the day, but after the sun went down it was deadly dull - didn't find a decent bar, club or music venue anywhere.
Maybe I was just unlucky.

Krakow. Been twice and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Loved Krakov, however the trip to Auschwitz (which is a must if you visit Krakov) was a moment in my life that I will never forget. Loved the salt mines.

In our younger, “before children” years, the wife and I did a few city breaks. I’m going back fifteen years now. But the best one we had was a surprise trip to Jersey she booked me for my 25th birthday.

Not a “city” break as such. But we had an absolutely brilliant time. Beautiful island, easy to get round in a hire car (40mph max speed limit!). You could see most of the main attractions during a long weekend. Weather was great too despite it being late October.

Have always said I’d go back one day but not had the chance yet. Would thoroughly recommend.

I’m guessing you didn’t eat at Noma, Geranium, Aoc, Alchemist etc
Hardly on a par with pub grub

Something Latin and something more Germanic/Nordic.

Barcelona, Rome or Lisbon and Berlin, Vienna or Stockholm.

I'd go for Rome and Berlin. If you go to Berlin, take a walking tour from Zoo Station. In Rome, a bit more sitting around people watching and eating cheap but excellent food away from tourist traps.

I was going to recommend Vienna, with a possibility of a day excursion to Salzburg. There isn’t that much in Salzburg, but lots of stuff in Vienna.
But you get Sachertorte and Mozartkugeln (red ones) at either place.

Rome is an obvious choice, so is Paris.

I don’t like Berlin that much but it has lots of things to see, would put Hamburg on the list of German places to visit. Dresden is supposed to be nice but not been myself.

If it’s a foody break one can’t go wrong with San Sebastián. But there isn’t much else do do other than eating well.
