• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

christmas is nearly hear when did it lose its meaning

Thanks Socket, but in fairness there's not much in Phil's comments here that I would disagree with.

In post no64 it's you who assumes that Phil has used the term "idiots" which he didn't and that is simply your spin on his words. I think an apology is in order!

Chris. I never said he had actually used the word 'Idiot', I rather suggested his reference to people having religious views talking 'utter nonsense' , 'a load of rubbish' and would believe in things parallel to the 'easter bunny' and 'tooth fairy' was rather condescending and suggestive that that are 'idiots'.

I would say an apology is in order for making such outlandish accusations to people who have a different opinion.

Become a spin doctor - because that is all you are doing

You have taken my views which was aimed at no one and trying to suggest all sorts of accusations.

It's extremly wrong and very disrespectful to do that

Two seperate people have mentioned it now and you pretty much ignore everything being said and carry on the spin

Now either you are actually being serious or you are a troll on a wind up - either way it's pathetic behaviour for a grown adult to behave.

The good news is you could find a perfect job in the current government

You can and have said what you believe. If I said you are talking utter nonsense and complete rubbish because I disagree with you then I would (IMO) be insulting your intelligence and my own. I hope you can see that.

TBH I might think you were being a tad over sensitive. I can claim what I believe without meaning to insult anyone's intelligence. If someone told me evolution was "utter nonsense" akin to the tooth fairy etc... I wouldn't feel my intelligence insulted in the slightest. I'd probably be intriuged why that person thought that way, and go have a drink with them, to discuss/debate it.

Was the midwinter feast not hijacked by the Christians.

So the OP's post is probably spot on.
A week of indulgence. Meet friends, eat, drink, slaughter a pig or cow, waste food stores and celebrate the end of one year and the coming of the New Year.

But there are people who believe in all sorts of things that others don't

Re incarnation, Ghosts, Life after death you can compile your own list, let's be honest, if you don't believe in a theory someone else has you are likely to think its "utter nonsense " you might, in extreme cases think they are an idiot for believing what the do. It isn't a massive problem to have such thoughts and I've certainly been called an idiot at times at times for giving a view on various matters, especially politics and sport - it isn't such a big issue Socket.

You might think it is nonsense but I would hope that you'd accept that there is a possibility he is correct. The problem I have is the 'absolutist' nature of dismissal that some have stated here.

By comparing a God (spiritual or otherwise) with the 'tooth fairy' and 'santa claus' rather trivialises something important to many and also any debate you might have. We all know for a fact that the latter are complete inventions and are accepted as such by all, whilst I have yet to find anyone who can prove to me that a God or other Higher Power does not exist. I would be interested to learn from those who dismiss 'God' as nonsense, what in fact this God is that they are so ready to dismiss - as I would have thought that to be able to determine whether something exists or not you must surely have to be able to define it. Any takers for an old geezer bloke with long white beard wearing white robes and sat on a cloud?

Same as I would like someone to prove to me that god in any format exists

I believe what I see and what I expirence

The problem is that belief in a god requires faith, "proof denies faith and without faith god is nothing"
The second you prove god exists, faith is usurped and god disappears in a puff of logic

With apologies to the late Douglas Adams

Thats why it's called 'Faith' No one needs to prove anything to you, you can believe what you like, the main difference is you will not be belittled for it.

Same for me.

Why would I believe in God but not in say, Bhudda? And that's the paradox, I can't prove there isnt a God and no one can prove there is. What I am certain of in my mind is that the world evolved and that it wasn't created by a God.

I don't need to prove to anyone that a God exists for me - but you are telling me a God doesn't exist on the basis that you yourself haven't seen or experienced a God. And so what you don't see or experience for yourself you don't believe - really? Could you accept that you might just be wrong (even a teensy weensy probability might) on the grounds that if you can't define it you won't know or be able to accept that it may be staring you in the face - though perhaps not literally :)

And no one has been belittled regardless of anyway you want to twist it

I was raised a very strict catholic - I have made my own mind up on what I believe and don't believe

Could I be wrong - yes

Could the people that have faith in religion be wrong - yes

I had religion in my life every single day until I was able to make my own choice - and my own choice was it is all nonsense and I prefer to believe in evolution and science

Right, that's it. I've been perfectly willing to ignore this rather pathetic "discussion" up to now based on the fact that Socket has appeared to be arguing with the person, not the theology. He has spun some personal comments into a reason to dismiss a posters beliefs (without once detailing his own beliefs I might add!!!), but the above is a crock of sh"t. You might dismiss the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus, but my children believe in them whole heartedly. Is their belief somehow less important than yours? Or are you another God Botherer who thinks that only you have access to the correct information? Just exactly how high is that horse of yours?

To my knowledge, the whole concept of God is unprovable. Just as the concept of Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy is unprovable. To dismiss any belief is a paradox that in turn renders your own belief unimportant. I respect your belief, just as I respect any faithfully held belief. I respect your right to hold it, just as I expect you to respect my right to think that your beliefs are wrong.

Oh, and I should point out, that right at this moment, there are probably more believers in Santa Claus, than in your Christian God. Take from that what you will.

Another argument based on blind prejudice. I would suggest you prefer personal attacks than debate of the subject matter. If you bothered to read the thread without a blinkered view you may see that I have put forward considered rationale for my viewpoint.

Please feel free to discuss any of them in detail if you wish but if its more of the previous then probably best not to.

Well said

blind prejudice of what exactly? Strangely enough, I always considered you as an intelligent person. I don't agree with your personal viewpoint, but I respected your position. This thread appears to suggest that I was wrong. It may take me a while to get use to the feeling. You can see that I'm not used to it.
