I agree with you a lot of people confuse both, but i can stand in my back garden or around the practice green and chip as well as anyone once i'm playing a comp it's a disaster that has nothing to do with my abaility to hit a chip the top 6 inches takes over and it is a disaster waiting to happen.
The person that hits one good chip and a couple of bad ones doesn't have the yips its the person that has 3 great practice strokes and then duff's it in front of then is the person suffering like the OP.
I have gotten over it somewhat this year by just repeating a random word when chipping so all thats going thru my head is that word. Using a utility with a putting stroke was the best method when i was really suffering at least i moved the ball forward most of the time.
But until you have experienced it with putting or chipping it is just the worst feeling in the world.

To all with the most encouraging advice
Tx guys...i have tried them all..honestly it must be mental and physical..i have the sweetest practice swing..dont we all...show me the ball and i panic....have tried 1 handed...actually works quite well....also look at club on backswing to take focus off ball...look 3 inches behind and in front of ball....sometimes i take practice swings and all off a sudden just hit the ball out of the blue..trying to confuse the brain i guess..end of day i will never b a 1 again...i will play percentage golf and putt where i have to and chip when i have no choice...after all its being out on the course that makes it what it is.
Tx again to all...rest assured if i ever sort it out you will hear from me again....i owe it to u as mine is so dismal that if i dont give up golf because of it thereis hope for anyone

Where are you located?

It sounds like you are way too focused on the club head.... whilst we swing the GRIP.

FORGET what the club is doing at the ball, just swing the grip past your left thigh, at a firm/fast/crisp pace.

to me this is the best chipping video ever, it's so simple.... no 'hinge and hold' or anything like that

,... "put both hands right here, past the ball",..... just swing the grip, put it past the ball

Good video, lovely and simple. No complex swing thoughts.

A really good method to stop dipping is to put your left foot to the right of your right foot (as though your legs were crossed at the ankles). Your feet will be touching.
Hmmmm that's not very clear when put in words!

The pro at our club advocates practicing chipping with your eyes shut! Set up to the ball as usual but make the swing and shot with your eyes shut! It seems to stop you decellerating the clubhead which s the most common cause of many chipping issues! I know it sounds odd but it honestly takes so much of both the physical and mental stimuli out of the equation and can make a big difference!

Apologies if my advice has been given already - read the first post and the last couple but thats it.

I really struggled with my chipping in the first half of the year, so went to the practice ground and just started working from 2 different angles - simple chips being an extended putting stroke and powering down wedge shots until I had shot that covered everything inbetween.

For the extended putting stroke, I worked with the ball on my back foot and the weight on my front foot, but keeping the weight there. Most simple thing I've ever and works for all clubs round the green. If you need a bit extra loft, just move the ball forward and open the club face. Again though, I just worked it in little increments and making small adjustments to the point where I was taking a full swing with an open to hit the ball 20 yards.

Been chipping like a total babboon the last week which is annoying as my tee shots have really been reasonably accurate of late.
Usually my chipping is the best part of my game but I've thineed and fatted them all over the shop lately!

@op take all the technical stuff out your head, stand up naturally to the chip and make sure you don't decelerate and 'see the club hit the ball'......... You'll be pleasantly surprised:thup:

Nail on the head.

I've suffered with this for the last 3 years and have only just begun to get over it. It's horrible and embarrassing, particularly if other aspects of your game are decent.

Basically, you chunk the ball because you decelerate, and you probably look up before you make contact. For me at least, both of these things were caused by anxiety about hitting the ball too hard.

The critical thing to think with a chip is don't decelerate. Go to the practise ground, hit as many chip shots as you like with only that thought in your head. I would be amazed if you don't see some improvement

Something I do if I'm not chipping well is to work out my line etc, put the club head about a foot behind the ball and take up my stance aligned parallel to my pre-determined target line. Next, I start making the desired swinging motion repeatedly and at the same time I inch the club & my body closer and closer to the ball until I'm in the right position and just hit it first time, no stopping to adjust and look up, just hit it. I don't know if this is legal (ie, do you have to put the head behind the ball before hitting it) but it works for me.

The reason I started doing this was because how many times do you make a couple of perfect practice swings only to duff the shot, hit the ground first, toe it etc. Seems to eliminate that.
