Having read the short game special in the July Mag (Harrington). I was glad to have my short game changes confirmed. I am using the "modern" and have been for a couple of months. I almost worked it out it worked best for me by myself, by going to the green one afternoon and just finding what worked for me... with a bit of help from my pro of course.

So my last 2 chipping sessions I have chipped in a total of 9 times, 4 Monday, 5 tonight. Both sessions were about 40 mins long and had a variety of chip lengths. Amazingly tonight I chipped in twice in a row.

Along with that I got up and down 8/10 times from a variety of lies twice, once was 9/10 times! Lengths of 15-30 yards.

This was all proceeded by a medal (prev Sat) where I got up and down about 7 times and chipped in on 18.

I really do like this modern method, it really does give you a huge margin for error and my best chips are just superb!

Well done GM for running it and thanks, it confirmed all the changes I had made myself about 6-8 weeks previous with my pro and on my own just finding out what worked for me.

Pity I had not been able to take it to the course a week ago in my work society knockout, my chipping was terrible then as my technique was poor, I blame that on my 3 weeks off golf while on holiday :)

I do suggest working on all the tips for the modern method in the GM mag, it has transformed my chipping and my pro is constantly complimenting me on my technique!

Nice work mate. I really need to practice more. Easiest way to shave a few shots a round off.

Chipping is where I'm spending my time starting tomorrow. I'm getting better but of my new h'cap I need to be hot, and I'm not. Will check out the mag, thanks for the tip

Note the left hand position and slight (VERY SLIGHT wrist cock needed). Try with the putting stroke instruction first for chipping and work up to retaining the loft through impact with a normal grip. The result is stunning! I felt like nearly every one would drop when I hit them well. After a bit I found myself cocking the wrist way too much, a quick revision of the technique and a reduction of this action and I was chipping good again.

Sounds great, I am working on it too but not hard enough. Better get to the club Monday and Friday evenings!

I've been a regular on our Par 3 course since the weather improved.
I actually don't try and hit the greens off the mat tees. I want to miss, I hit about 5 or 6 balls on each tee and then chip/pitch them up to the holeside. If it's quiet I'll pick them all up, chuck them down and do it again.
It's actually quite good fun!
And it's improving my short game no end!

When ever someone asks me how to lower their handicap. I will always answer with work on your short game. I really feel like I've lost a bit of touch with my short game atm, and its starting to show in my golf. I've stopped trusting that I can get up and down and started to put alot of pressure on hitting greens from fairways.
My handicap is in my short game, always has been and hopefully after some work (doesn't help that I'm working away for the next 5 weeks though) i'll be knocking it around in single figures again...as I havent done that in a good few months.

Back when I was a schoolboy, my dad made a hole in the back garden, I used to put a circle of rope around it with a 3 foot diameter and practice chipping over the rockery some 20 feet away and would be out there for hours chipping with an 8 iron off the back foot with hands forward trying to get inside the circle, I'd usually hole 2 out of 10. Out on the course if I missed a green I was that confident I knew I had a safe par coming up. It's all about the practice IMHO

It's actually very similar to what I was told to do by my pro so not much to change for me, just need to practice.
