For someone who carries 3 wedges in his bag (soon to be 4, maybe!) I find that I use either a 5 or 7 iron for "dinks" around the green!

On a couple of occasions I have even used a 4 rescue from a longer fringe.

Anyone else do likewise?

Yes. I'm a Rescue Putt guy. And if the path to the green is clear, then 7 or 8 with putt-ish stroke works better than wedges. Once just missed an Eagle on Old Course 15th with an 80yd putt!

Unfortunately, the lack of use/practice means that the wedge shots near the green when I have to use them are pretty dodgy!

i like to putt whilst off the green,i find a bad putt can be as good as a good chip.depends on what the lie is like and the grass that is between the ball and the flag.

most of the time i use the 48* wedge unless i need to get a bit of height, then it's the 56* and on the odd occasion the 60* is used.

quite funny youve posted this , cos my goal this year is to diversify my short game

ive been a player who always trys to fly the ball to the hole but ive been practicing using a 7or8 iron
when a straight roll up can be played , so i guess now ive started to look at the short game differently,
rather than just grab a wedge and try a big phil chip shot

After all my chipping issues this is exactly what I'll be doing from now

Love these sort of shots around the green and will use whatever is needed to get the ball as close to the hole as possible. More often than not though i'll go to my 9-iron and that has worked wonders over the winter. If I can take my putter from off the green, then I will, but it obviously depends on the lie.

I have a few shots in the bag, the 7 iron bump and run, the PW 50/50, the 52* stopper and the 56 stopper.

I use the heel up putter stroke technique as described in the last GM mag, I left the loft do the work, with the higher lofts it has little roll out and is used when there is something in the way ie bump, tier, sprinkler, rough. The PW rolls about half and flies half and is used more from distance with plenty of green but I also need to fly a little bit of fairway etc. The 7 iron is used when I think a putter would work but I want a putt like shot.

Pretty simple really, nothing complex. My other rule is in the rough I use more loft and play a pitch type shot.

If to be more creative around the greens and my shots are now ranging from an 8i through to 58* with the odd 7i on really long bump and runs. I'm trying to mix it up a bit

I like my 7 if I'm just off the green. Get it rolling and watch it go in!

What he said ^
Particularly usefull in a pressure cooker matchplay situation around the green, your opponents just knifed a wedge trying the old flop shot trick, you step up play the old safe as houses bump and run. Gives you that smug warm feeling inside :)
Not quite as easy when there's a bunker to go round

Short game was costing me loads of shots. Was relying to heavily on the 60 degree wedge, which was fine from the rough. If I had a tight lie on the fairway then I'd be screwed and end up duffing it.

Dumping the 60 deg after thinning a few through the green yesterday. Using the pw for most shots now, unless there is something in the way then I use the SW to get it up and over.

Looking forward to working from home a few days, so I get round our wee 9 hole course. Perfect for practising the short game

8 iron used to be the club of choice until I had a lesson. 50 degree is now standard, 54 for up and over and 58 from a bunker. stopping the temptation to decelerate on the downswing was a hard task, but I am seeing better results now. Putting a backstop (like my bag) to shorten the backswing was a great aid to ensure club speed through the ball, as I had to accelerate through the enforced limited space, getting the ball up and checking as well. It has also stopped me trying to fashion lunacy as well by having a drill.

For my 1st 18 months in golf I used the much derided 'chipper' club OR 58 lob wedge two completely different clubs obviously......was doing ok with the 'easy way out' chipper but found the wedge much harder to handle near edge of green.

Then took a bit of advice from another golfer to try bump/chip and run shots around the green.....with an 8 iron more or less treating it like a putt.....and its been going quite well for 6 months now.....my 2nd option I switch to from deeper grass is my pitching wedge and thats been doing ok too. I am happier around the greens with these 2 clubs.....and the chipper is firmly binned in the garage now

Obviously depends on the Lie, but I use many different clubs, from rescue club chip/putt, to a 60 Lob
But only use Loft if required, thats the Best advice I was given, Though i am confident with all my wedges
Most people better off keeping it low, and get it rolling ASAP, easier to Control
