My mate always plays golf with me and today we had 18 in the morning. Same crack as usual basically, tried to keep score so it was a least something to aim for and be compeditive. Well, he marked the card and i just kept a mental note, i.e. +1 +2 etc. End of the round i finish level and to my suprise he said he does as well! Dnt get me wrong I dnt mind but my note put him at +5!

It happens all the time and tbh sometimes its quite blatent but I just continue all the same. What worries me tho is if he is doing it in comps. Hes off 3 and me 1 but in my eyes he shud be off more and he can very rarely play to it. But for him its a staus thing and he just trys everything to play off low figures.

Its quite sad really as all the locals proper bum all over him thinking hes an awesome player but tbh he talks a very good game. I dont think ive ever seen him break par, which tbh a 3 handicapper shud do regular.

Just thought i'd have a rant

P.s i also hate it wen he picks his ball up from 6 feet for par and says im giving myself that

but im not bitter :D haha

Not sure what to say about that. I would have a word with him, hes going to make a fool of himself if others spot it, and they will.

I guess if he is having fun and its helping him keep his head up in friendlys.... no, sod that, how many 6 foot puts can you miss?!

I dnt know how he wud take it if i brought it up! And he misses a lot of 6 foots lol his putting is terrible! he took 3 to get out of a bunker and only said he took 2 shots! now that is how blatent it can get!

One of our group does this, it does my head in.He brought his handicap over from our old course, which was much easier and refuses to enter comps knowing he'll get boosted.Anything within 6 foot is a gimme and he'll argue it was a cert to go in.fortunately he's not playing much nowadays.

My mate does the same apart from he makes new rules up as we go along. He plays off 19 and rarely plays to it but he does this for a bit of banter and we go along with it. Only a practice game at the end of the day so why not have a laugh :).

P.S he doesnt do this in competitions :p.

I'd choose different playing partners.........

as for pickin up from 6'........you're havin a laugh.........18" is generous in our games.......

Arent your Handicaps 'official' ?? Do you play at the same Club ?

If its a nasty day and we are just playing a few holes I may not putt out, but I will not be marking a card or even keeping a score. What you guys are talking about is just silly. I think they have missed the point of the game.

easy way, just add he's scores over your next few games and then hit him with 3 new cards and the new accurate handicap.

It may blow up in your face though ;)

Someone I play with is similar to this. We usually play in a group of 3 and none of us are members at a club so we all use the same handicap tracking system (golfshake.com). 1 of the guys will quite often lose a ball and all of a sudden it turns up looking a lot whiter and newer than the ball played previously. He also picks the ball up and cleans it no matter where on the course it has come to rest.

I find it highly frustrating as we are off a very similar handicap according to golfshake but I know his should be higher due to these reasons and a fair few "forgotten" strokes.

You should send him up to play with my two mates from Tain. These buggers never give me a putt unless its about an inch from the hole, i don't blame them though i have been known to miss from a foot away

If it's just a friendly, no money on it, and you enjoy the company i wouldn't worry about it. Why don't you suggest keeping a medal card for both of you, and if he gets his score wrong, you can give him so friendly stick. He would probably improve his putting if he had to hole out.

My feeling is, do what you like if your not making a score, but if you are in any way keeping tabs on it or claiming it to your friends it has to be correct. I played last week on my own and putted everything out as I had a card in my hand and there was no one to "gime" my short putts. You cant give them to yourself!

Damn cheats. You guys have to say something.

OP - do you enter official comps at your club? Put him down with someone else every time!
Why not just keep a score card and verify the score after each hole? You add it up and see if he comes to the same conclusion, if not why not? Set the rules for gimmes early on - 2 feet max or even say we're holing out as it's better practice. Sounds like he's taking you for a muppet unfortunately.

Does he mark his ball... and finish with the same one?

Sounds like a cheat... can understand the whole 'stigma' thing but that's neither an excuse or good reason.

His surname isn't Saltman is it?

Splash - yes we play officially, surprisingly he never scores anywhere near his handycap but he somehow manges to remain around the same handycap. His dad is involved in the club tho so i am suspicious.

Alex - this was a proper card we were trying to keep. I finished off at all times no matter what.

Richart - i do enjoy the game and the talk so this is why i am reluctant to say anything

Patrick - i give him nothing! he gives himself them lol, u cnt stop that!

Davey - i feel the same, he gets a lot of credit for being a gud golfer wen i feel he really isnt

Macster - yes we have official handycaps and have for ages. I think he has got low falsely IMO

Personally I don't see the point in him having a false low handicap. Surely he will get caught out in the long run. People will begin to wonder how he never performs at comps yet never goes up.

But surely that implies that the club you are both members of is rife with cheating and thats not a great state of affairs. He surely must hit under his hcp in some comps or the above becomes true and is disgraceful. He's not taking advantage of your kindness when he hits a good score in a comp is he??

I duno, I know my mates well enough to say something but I am a pretty up front guy. My mate I play with most is pretty mild and I even think he would say something to me if I were doing something he did not like.

You have made a post about it so it does bother you, I think you should say something. Make it easy "your not doing yourself a sevice by not playing out mate" "or oh I had you as par there, one off the tee, that one in the bush, on to the green and a putt makes 4" It does not have to be in his face or brash. The thing is, he knows hes cheating.

Sounds like I wouldnt wanna play with his Dad either then........

What kind of a Club is it for gods sake ? Surely all handicap adjustments are made by Computer as scorecards entered ?? If his Dad is altering them, then it stinks.

Find a new mate, no matter how good a 'mate' of mine, if he's cheating - I aint playin.
