Cheapest place in the country to live?

I've just sold a 3 bed detached, decent sized gardens and a 4 car drive. New bathroom and kitchen for £125k.

just outside Middlesbrough.

I need to move somewhere cheaper. We're renting but the 3 bed detached two doors down from us has just gone on the market for 245k. We're in a 4 bed and they are close to 300k and normally sell within 3 or 4 days of going on the market.

I'd guess at Peterhead. Having just sailed from there I can confirm that it is a total hole. I can't believe that anyone would choose to live there for any other reason than it's cheap. Not sure there are many places in the country that you could get a detached 5 bed dormer bungalow for 230k.

Or a 3 bed mid terrace for 126k

Pfft, you could get a mansion in Gateshead for £126 :D

Thats still a bargain! 3 beds here are 300+ and 4 beds are 500k minimum. Wish i grew up somewhere cheaper, but cant move from the area!

You can't live in colchester then? 3 bed semis in my area are 300K +

No, I've escaped and live in Beccles in north Suffolk now. There are parts of the town where you can get a 3 bed terraced for around 130k but they're not the bits I'd want to live in. The last one I looked at was a 3 bed detached for 180k that needed complete modernisation but it had sold before I got a chance to view it. The estate agent said that they'd had a full asking price offer for it before they'd even got it on rightmove.

Blimey, how much is a one bed flat that way?

Cheapest is a two bed flat for £30k. Decent, modern two bed for £50k

Conversely, the daughter is buying a terrace house in Camberwell for £875k - madness!

Reading ain't cheap and now that Crossrail is coming I dread to think what kids are going to have to pay for even a shoebox.

UK property prices in the south are obscene.

I'd guess the usual suspects like Hartlepool, parts of Wales or Scotland. As others have said, the prospects for new buyers in most parts of the country are grim. Wouldn't like to be getting onto the property ladder these days

Guessing, as others have already indicated, the NE... When I was talking about my retirement plans, at work, one of the young lads advised his Dad had just retired and moved back to the NE [Stockton I believe] ... Buying a row of six terraced houses with the end two being knocked into one dwelling for him to live in whilst collecting rent from the other four... All for much less than what I was looking at paying for a retirement bungalow in Norfolk/Suffolk...
