Been round to parents today and me mum asked about “ one of those big screen things that takes photos”. A tablet. She has mentioned about having one to take photos, but I don’t have a clue where to start. I know they will do a thousand other things but she only really wants one for photography. She only really has one condition. It has to be cheap.
Any suggestions as to where to start and look.

What's the budget Tashy?

re me mother as cheap as possible. I picked me ma and pa up from the airport last Weekend. She had been in the Caribbean for a couple of weeks and took nigh on no pictures. She has asked me to look into a “screen thingy”. Apparently she has seen loads of folk with them taking photos. She thinks it’s the future. She is 80 yrs old and one of her two phones ( which she keeps in her bra so she can hear it vibrate when it rings, honest) is over 22 yrs old. The camera and screen size is well 22 yrs old.
simple is the key word.

If she does not want to spend any money and fears apps then would it not be better to get a cheap point and click camera than a cheap tablet? As the camera on a cheap tablet will be mostly rubbish unless the conditions are perfect, and it may well confuse her. Where as the cheap camera will be half decent at taking pictures as that is the only thing they are made to do, and easy to use.

unfortunately HK, I have been down that route. We got her a camera to use on an amazon cruise a few years back. When she came back she had 20 photos on it. For some reason she had a play with it ( camera) in the cabin and she filled the memory card with half on hour of her moaning at me dad in video mode coz she could not work she camera out. Even though I had highlighted how to take photos.

Can't help thinking a phone is the answer. Tablets are so much bigger and more awkward to carry around. Are they really going to take a tablet on a night out, take a picture etc. A phone is so much more convenient. Have a look for a second hand phone with an sd card slot to expand the memory. Apologies if you have already had this discussion with them.
