Cheap shoes/Expensive shoes

Never buy classic tours, they are junk, stick with the leather soled version, classic dry premieres, if you go down this route.

I've got classic tours and they are so comfortable, i'd take the spikes out and wear them to go out in. I was lucky and got them for nothing but i'd quite happily pay for the next pair :)

The tours just aren't in the same league as the premieres in terms of leather and build quality, (I have both), and the sole is too thick, making them look like army boots. Mine leak too, but this isn't why I don't rate them.

If you are looking at myjoys, I got a pair of dryjoy PODS last summer (they were the new shoe for 08) and my pro did them for £110 after a call to Footjoy. A standard pair were selling in AG with an RRP of £99.99 so basically I got my own design for £10.

I just got a pair of FJ Dryjoys 08 model for a decent price. Before that were a pair of Greenjoys.

The Greenjoys were great, for the money, and very easy to maintain. They were comfy, and required no breaking in. However after 2 years the plastic eventually split.

I was going to buy another pair, but I didn't like the chunky style of the 08 model. Thus the Dryjoys. Comfy straight out of the box, even more so than the Greenjoys. I tried Nike, as we have an outlet store in Portsmouth, but for whatever reason they just didn't fit my feet.

Would I pay £140 for a pair of shoes? Lets put it this way, it all depends on what it represents as a percentage of your income. Same deal as the watch analergy I gave a few weeks ago. It's all reletive.

This is a subjective point but to cover the question wholistically first......There is little difference in useability or comfort.

In more detail however there are many factors, a good shoe, tried and tested and very popular will command respect and a price, a poor one will not.

The market place will host quality and crap shoes at a high price and quality and crap shoes at low prices, the secret is getting your own value for money in seeking out the best for you.

Myself, I always look for bargains or value for money, I would never pay £160 quid for golf shoes but would be happy to pay 45 quid for the same shoe in the sales if it was a quality shoe. I would also be happy to pay £25 for a comfortable shoe that has a guarantee for a year ( as I wear now) because comfort is paramount, and 25 quid is well worth it even if its just for a year, brilliant if they last much longer. Thats just me and has been for years regardless of finantial state at the time.

I have examined the construction of some very expensive shoes and found them no better than mid priced shoes or even one or two of the cheaper makes.

My longest lasting golf shoes have been mid range or occasionally cheap models, next are the more expensive models bought in sales and the worst ones had nothing to do with cost at all(though one pair were expensive), they were either uncomfortable or wore out far too quickly because they were badly made.

There is a chance that getting what you pay for may be the best view to have, but you can sometimes pay well for crap.

Telling you again guys............I'm a shoe trollop got Nikes-great,Adidas-too small,Reebok-nice looking but need serious breaking in,and the best by a mile for comfort, instant fit, waterproofing and looking really really smart looking---ETNIS(off evil bay)......£40 a pair..now have 3 pairs and love them, really spicy and great colours range!
Have a look and post your comments please?! :)

The Classic's Dry Premier are in a completely different league build quality wise, to any other shoes I have viewed/fondled or worn, simple as that.

Whether they are worth the price is up to you entirely

The only shoes for myself I consider are either Footjoys or ECCO, the simple reason is that they are the best quality and can be worn from the box and keep your feet dry. I spent about £85 on my PODs last summer and have never looked back, not once after a round have I had aching ankles or blisters unlike some cheaper ones.

When I first came onto the forum I started a thread asking for advise on shoes and the main thing was "buy what you budget will stretch too" and its proved to be the best case for myself.

I am sure the budget FJ's like GreenJoys and the likes are very good shoes and do everything it says on the box, the same can be said for some highend Hi-Tec's.

In the Spring or summer I shall be buying the footjoy SYNR-G shoes as I know they will be a great wear from experience of Stubert & Addidas shoes which where both poor imho.

They look real nice, I think the RRP is about £240 mark!!!

While I appreciatte the more is better argument, I stick with AQLs/Aqualites because they last for years, god knows how old my last pair are I've had them so long, and I found Dryjoys much heavier to wear. So as good comfort and dryness, but less tiring on the legs.

I have switched to Nike this season, as they were the same price as a new pair of AQLs, and I wanted to try out Nike and the stingers as I am still a spike man and hate normal black widow type softies.

however I would never buy a "cheap" brand, nor go lower than AQL in the range. tried Greenjoys once and they were terrible shoes, and had a pair of Stylo Goretex, which while not cheap, were a cheap brand imo, and they were very very heavy to wear, and the support collapsed badly on them, so much so that they were binned while still being totally waterproof.

For most players a good brand and mid-range shoes will be pretty indistinguishable from the very top of the line. (IMO)

In terms of how long shoes last, it very much depends how often you play. I often bin shoes for being worn out and no longer waterproof well within their 2 year warranty, because I cannot in all honesty expect the manufacturer to replace something I have worn out. I am sure they are designed for 'casual use', cetainly less than one game per week. I probalby play 5 times a week for 3/4 of the year, and 2 times for the other 1/4. Therefore I must play about 230 rounds a year, at 6500 yards a time, is 1495000 yards walking, ie: 849 miles, if I walk in a straight line, and not including getting to the next tee. There is no way I can send a pair back to FJ after 18 months and complain that they aren't waterproof.

Does that include going to the bushes for a pee and lost balls? ;)

If I find them, they aren't lost are they?

I wonder if the shoes are waterproof so you don't get wet feet when you 'visit the bushes'.

Not that exact model but I got married in a pair of them....

Have worn nike shoes for about 10 years now - wouldn't wear anything else - too comfy....

I used to be an out and out FJ man. Various models over the years paying anything from £45-£100 for them.

A couple of years back, I ended up with a pair of Hi-Tech CDT shoes. They lasted well, 2 full seasons and still going, and were a very comfortable fit for my feet.

I recently bought a pair of FJs again, Dryjoys, again, a good fit.

However - I caught a late bargain in an online sale, a pair of Hi-Tech V Lites for £15 (delivered). Given that they are not leather, they will be used in the more inclement conditions thus saving the good shoes for better weather.

As long as they fit well are comfortable and are reasonably weatherproof / waterproof I will wear virtually anything.

I think that is the crux. Irrespective of whether they are £15 or £150 if they keep your feet warm and dry that is all that matters. It is the length of time they last that the issue is with

Sam, how did I know you would be wearing Nike's.

I bet Sam wears one of these as well ;)
