Right, as i see it, this is my dilema:

I could change now to a custom fit set of irons(thinking mizuno again). all fitted to my current swing.

Or

Spend this year improving a bit more, improving my technique, then get fitted.

My concern being that if i get fitted now, for how i'm currently swinging it, and then improve, would i benefit from getting another fitted set in 18 months? ie, would it be a wasted invetsment now??
Hope this makes sense!

If you're aim for this year is single figures, and you feel your current irons are holding you back. I'd say get fitted sooner rather than later, it's not like you're a high handicapper so the irons you end up with (i.e MP 58's, mx-300 etc.) will serve you well until you reach your goal.

i'm probably the last person to ask regarding club changes but cant you get refitted later if needed?

You are off 12 now so I cannot see you needing any major equipment changes from 12 to about 5 hcp so I'd go for fitting now and you should see the benefit.

I tend to agree about getting them now as you clearly are capable of playing well so I'm guessing a C/F set should help although I am wondering why the change if the clubs you hav have got you this far. Is it really the equipment or is there a part of your game (i.e. chipping or putting) that could really make the difference. A couple of lessons may be a cheaper way of hitting single figures

My chipping is alright, my putting is improving (prob averaging 33 putts per round the last few months), espially recently.

I miss too many greens, at least half per round, so its my iron play where my biggest area of improvement lies (that and simple concentration!).
Have one more lesson available from a block of four i took this time last year, which im sitting on for a while

I think that unless you are going for a major swing change and you already have pretty good technique then go for the new clubs now as they can usually be adjusted if necessary.
Only today I had my new (second hand) \Taylor made burners adjusted from standard to 1 degree up right.
You may wish to check that any new clubs you buy can be adjusted as some such as ones with very short hosels cant be.

No dilema for me.

The CT irons were a version of the T-zoid range. I had a set of cheap T-zoids and they were the worst clubs I've ever owned. Absolutely horrible. Not a patch on anything I've owned since. Yours might be OK, but if they are the ones I've seen.... :)

Go and get a set of nice new irons. It's not like you're a beginner, even a some changes to your swing isn't going to suddenly ruin a nice set of irons C/F to your specification etc.

Hi im in a similar situation to you, i decided to get custom fit now (mizunos too) but at the rate they are taking it might be 18 months before i get them!!!!

I've seen demo days springing up all over the place recently. Manufacuturers pushing new gear before the season starts.....If your set on changing then
go to a few, try a load of new kit, and see if there is any marked difference to the clubs you currently have.

However, Just my opinion for what is worth....If your off 12 and still improving I think tiding up the short game and trying to make more birdies from 100 yards in will see you make the drop to single figures, not new gear.

I would suggest that you hold back on the new set of irons until your happy with your swing. If you are happy that you won't be changing your swing then commit to having a custom fit but only if your sure no more swing changes are going to be made.
Just think about this scenario.. You get your custom fit clubs tailored to your swing and in that last lesson your coach tells you to change something in the swing mechanics. You will constantly think about the clubs now not being completely custom to your new swing and will want them re-fitted to you. (voice of someone who fell into that one- doh!!!)

I would go with C/f now, its unlikely that if you playing off 12 currently that you need any major swing changes that would suddenly make the irons unsuitable to you.

From my experience last year I was shooting around 80-84 consistantly and I thought my swing was good but the coach I saw wanted me to lower my hands through impact for more consistancy with my iron play hence me needing to re-adjust the lie angle. It does play on my mind that I need it doing so just make sure you have that last lesson first then get the C/F done afterwards.

Think i've come to a decision having played this afternoon - 1 over at the turn (dont ask how it ended after the weather came in....) but, if i can get it round 9 holes at that rate (did i mention the 3 consectutive birdies..?) then i dont need new irons to get better. That is a fact, it must be, right??

So, for this season i'm sticking with them. If i utter a word otherwise then just remind me of my new commitment to them!
