I pushed my tee shot into the trees yesterday on a hole that tends to draw balls that way.

I found mine and played out but also saw a few balls lying around on the ground unclaimed. On closer inspection they were all crappy balls, which got me thinking.
Assuming you play a reasonable quality ball. Would you or do you change to a cheaper or older ball for a tee shot where the chance of losing it is higher than normal?

God no, it is admitting you are going to mess it up. Tends to be a self fulfilling prophesy. I play with the same ball, til I lose it, or it is crackered.

Playing with a good ball 100% gives maximum incentive NOT to lose it :-)

Anything else is just admitting your crap and arent likely to improve imo.

Not a chance , same ball all the time. What if you flush it 260 and have a nice wedge left ? Dont want to be hitting a crappy ball into the green for your second :D

Arguably it's against the rules. when you change a ball (in competition) it should be the same type (ie compression) otherwise it would be deemed changing the format to suit the hole, a bit like adjusting the driver head weights from a fade to a draw.

I think its only the pro game that says you have to play the same type of ball. As long as you declare to your partner the change of ball on the tee before you play there isn't a penalty.
you may be right. I think it would be a psychological advantage to you opponent if you declare you are changing your pro v1 for a commando!! :D

I deffo wouldn't change balls as it just creates negative thinking, the same goes with taking two balls to tee off "just in case", you might as well say to yourself "this is going OOB" which no doubt will.

I agree, i would never change balls though i would take a ball back to a tee a distance away but it would have to be in my left pocket. anywhere else and it would be destined for OB. :D

Yes, undoubtedly....not very often though, that's negative thinking. :)

The Committee can make a local rule for a competition that a "one ball" condition is in place - but the R&A say such rules are recommended only for competitions involving "elite players" - whoever they may be (ie not me). Other than that you can swap the ball - between holes - any time you like. And there's nothing to say you have to inform your oppo. (Except if you don't then you'll have a hard job proving a ball in the rough is actually yours - especially if its a different type to the last one you were both looking for.)

Absolutely, definitely do not change balls. If you do: Golf Course and/or Opponents 1, Vig 0.

I don't do it.

I found a few balls in the shrubbery and they were all crappy ones and it got me thinking. I can't believe that everyone else plays with crappy balls ALL the time.

No Ant the pond is all water now. If you get one of those long ball retrievers you can get it back yourself :D

Meet the new family addition....
