Interesting night for the refs.

Any idea why:

Balotelli wasn't a penalty in the last minute.

Walcott was off side despite the last touch coming off a schalke player.

Podolski having the whistle blown for an injured schalke player, despite being through on goal, and the injury clearly not involving heads.

Poor reffing is ruining a good competition.

Tough position to be a ref with the speed of the game and a lot of players going down easily nowadays but the linesman? Behind the goals have a lot to answer for in these situations I think

It's ok for the pundits to criticise with all the technology they have

But you get some you shouldn't and vice versa

What do the drones behind the goal actually do. It was a flawed idea when they had them in the Europa league and I've never seen any of them give any form of decision. For my money it was a penalty on Balotelli and the ref simply bottled it

Yep defo penalty , the offside for the goal before that was "questionable" also ..

What we must not 4get for some of the decisions tho lads is the players have been the cause of it themselves , diving & cheating etc , some times the ref gets fooled & gives the decision ,they are lambasted , sometimes he gets it wrong the guy was fouled and he doesnt give it , ref gets lambasted .. the referees have a might tough job , there needs to be video evidence even after the fact & if you are found to have won a pen or got a guy booked /sent off by cheating , automatic 3 match ban .. this would cut out the ammount of cheating and make refereeing the game easier .. in the long term..

As for the guys behind the goals, seemingly they are not supposed to signal any fouls etc , they are to communicate verbaly only with the 3 main officials & they signal .. no idea wjy but that seems to be their breif ..

As mugs said tho lets not forget the pundits have , slow mo , frame by frame from all different angles to check .. match officials have split second at ground level with other people between them ..

I don't think it's limuted to just the CL though Murph.

I've said that the quality of reffing decisions over the past few weeks, maybe longer have been socking in the Premier League.

The standard really has reached a new low IMHO.

Dont remember the Man City players and/or Mancini being so upset about a poor decision when West Hams perfectly good goal was disallowed at the weekend.

These things happen in football and the way they reacted last night was disgraceful and they should have the book thrown at them.

Time to go to two referees, one in each half. The same issue about the speed of the game happened in ice hockey a few years back as one referee and two linesmen were missing calls. So they tried out two refs in 25% of the games one season and it worked much better. So it became standard.

Yes you would have differences between the two in terms of calling fouls but that is human nature. And no manager can ever complain about consistency when they bleat about a penalty one week and then claim they didn't see the same thing the next week.
