i'm on the lookout for a back up chainsaw,i currently have a few huskies but they are kept at the two places i work at and i need one as a back up at my house...

the amount of times i've needed them especially just now when there is a tree stopping the horse form accessing the burn for water:(

but this one needs to be as cheap as possible.......any recommendations?does anyone have any experience of the cheap ones on ebay?

does anyone have any for sale;)

Plenty of cheaper ones in B & Q and the like. Can I urge you to make sure that they have good safety devices and that you buy a complete forestry gear with it!

Safety with chain saws is an absolute must!

i have all relevant safety gear and iirc all chainsaws now sold have to meet the safety regilations which make them safe enough.

the problem with stihl saws is they are expensive, there is plenty cheap ones on ebay brand new but even with a 6 mnth warranty something is putting me off,but maybe for the amount it will be getting used i should go for it.

mcculloch seem to go cheap and my grandpa was telling me that years agon in the woods it was laughable to be using a mcculloch but now, everyone is using them.they are just as good if not better than huskies and the likes.parts are easily had for them aswell, oregon bars and chains which vastly improve them.

i was really hoping someone on here would have for sale as obvioulsy i can't do an add in the for sale section without getting a bollocking :)

Try one of the Arb forums, dare say there'll be gear for sale there.

Second hand saws are very risky, if they were any good people would just keep them. High revving 2 stroke engines are going to wear out. A lot of users don't do the upkeep needed either and some don't bother with chain oil at all so the engine's going to be working far harder than it should.

I think a cheap new one would be better than a second hand 'branded' one.

I have got three Stihl saws and my view is (with most things actually), buy cheap, buy twice.

A mate had a McCulloch from new last year and it is already knackered.

Stihl all the way for me. You get what you pay for on kit like this. A couple of tree surgeons I know say that Makita saws aren't bad too but I would guess they are about the same as Huskies or Stihl anyway?

Sorry not to be more helpful.

Snelly.

I have a plant and tool hire business and don't do chainsaws, but all my disc cutters are Stihl and, for what it's worth, we repaired a chainsaw for a customer last week that was about 30 years old. It was a Stihl and we could still find spares for it!

Brother in law had his Stihl swiped from his lock-up last year... Due to cash flow issues could only buy a cheapie from Screwfix... Got a Ryobi and for the money he feels it was a pretty good buy... Didn't fall apart first time he used it... As has been the case when using similiar from brands other than Stihl...

Hi Wull,

You can buy a new Stihl MS170 for £169 inc VAT but thats only a 12" bar. I agree that buying cheap is false economy but if thats all your budget stretches to then perhaps contacting a dealer or hire shop and ask if they have any units they may sell on (Fraser Robb of Drymen Action LAwn & Leisure Stirling) . As Chris mentioned Stihl keep spare for 10 years after a machine is deleted so you know you can always get a spare part. I have a guy who managed to find a art for a saw he got in 1968.

Good luck.

Let us know how you get on.

with a 12" bar it would be ideal as a back up and with a 30cc engine it would be able to handle a 14/16" bar i would have thought.

there is a&b services up here and my mate who plays golf owns the company, buti haven't seen him to ask but i reckon it will be expensive for what i want it for.he is a agent for husqvarna and oregon but whether he has any cheap ones for sale i don't know.
