After playing the Twenty Ten last Feb, me and my mate decided to play it again (this Wednesday just gone) and booked up a couple of months ago for £89 each, thinking that playing in August will be a better experience i.e. faster greens etc.

Well, we get there at 10:30am teeing off at 1:40pm, and go up to the range, then the short game area and all good. We then go to the Twenty Ten check in and get ready, get taken to the practice area 40mins before tee, photos taken and off we go.

My tee shot just in rough on right, mate centre of fairway. We walk up to the ball an then the mother of all thunderstorms hits us for 20mins!! The klaxons go off, there is water cascading down the fairways and paths, and the greens are like the olympic swimming pool!!

The groundstaff work hard to get the course playable and we get to go back out, but the greens were a little slow but dry out a bit as the round progresses, however the fairways are soden and very squelchy.

My point is this, we decided with 6 other groups to go back out and everybody else had vouchers, but I had travelled 80miles and booked a day off work and to play half a hole would have been cr*p. I just feel a little short changed and dont feel that I have had experienced the Twenty Ten as I would have expected, I know its not their fault for the weather, but should I ask for a voucher or some sort of recompense?

i think if you ended up play 18 holes then how can you now ask for a voucher??

as you said its not their fault that it rained, and u also said the grounds staff tired their hardest to get the course playable again. seems like to me that you got what you paid for.

if you dont like rain then play an indoor sport.

On balance I have to agree.
If you had the opportunity for a voucher but decided to go back out then the offer has been made and rejected.
You can't really go back on it.

Witnessing the RC Friday first hand I can, I feel, safely say that had it not been the RC there would have been no play on that Friday.
The amount of water that was being "bow-waved" in front of the Captain's buggies showed that, although the drainage is good, it couldn't handle a huge downpour quickly. The greens were ok but the fairways and rough were, really and truly, unplayable.

If I'd have seen the greens under water and they offered a voucher I'd have bitten their hands off......

I know what you mean. My 2010 experience was ruined when I left the superb clubhouse and went to play the course which is essentially a decent piece of farmland that has been turned into a very mediocre golf course that I did not enjoy very much at all. It is Belfry-esque.

I think the expression is "harsh but fair"

I think garush is pretty much spot on, as you decided to carry on you've had your money's worth. If it's any consolation, the same thing happened to me in Myrtle Beach a few years ago. They pulled us off the course and gave us vouchers for a free game. So we just had to go back the following year............ :-)

Thats unlucky, I'm from Newport and I can tell you that we have had a stupid amount of rain this year, all the courses in the Area are very soggy,it's just the amount of rain this year. The 2010 is a great course if you ever get the chance to play it again when less soggy.

at least you didn't have the course full to bursting and waiting on every shot or the gestapo marshalls chasing your every step, the worst value for money experience i have ever had playing golf.

I do agree guys that as I carried on then its my own fault, its just that we had both talked about this for weeks leading up to last Wednesday and on the range/practice area we were both on fire. Its just the two things:-

1. I had booked a day off especially for this and as I have a young baby now, my time for golf is extremely precious and from playing 3 times a week, I now play every 3 weeks. So I was not going to walk off, I needed a golf fix! plus running out of annual leave so couldnt really return.

2. Like I said after playing there in February I really wanted to experience the fast greens, plush fairways and excellent bunkers. The greens were 5/10, Fairways sodden 4/10, Bunkers 2/10. Would you pay £140 for that?

I do feel for you mate in same situation with time and family commitments so any golf wants to be enjoyed.

But I think most courses are very wet and in similiar not in pristine condition and unfortunate addition to the poor summer we've had.

i can see what your saying, and understand that time factors may not be ideal. but considering the summer we've had its still not their fault.

it may not be ideal to pay £140 for that condition but a games a game. I better there 5/10 greens are still better than a lot of places about considering the weather we've had.

at the end of the da they have done all the could to get you to be able to play 18 holes and you did

Always a risk that a scheduled day is going to be a washout.

You were offered a choice and took one option, so can't really complain on that front.

However, I'd be inclined to expect some sort of deal (like 50%) for a return to have been included in the option you took.

50% would be very fair IMO. I will reiterate that the staff at Celtic Manor are/were Superb and it was NOT their fault that it rained so heavily and did a fantastic job to at least get the course re-opened. You dont mind you own course being 5/10 after rain, but I dont know about you, I dont play these types of courses very often!
