Speaking to a volvo dealer, and he mentioned £300 for Carplay full fitted. What exactly is there to 'fit' in Carplay? The BMW has a similar £99 Carplay prep. So declined it. Came home, a bit of Google and Youtube shows you what options to choose and hey presto, Carplay activated. I am assuming all the hardware & software is already in the car, so what are the dealers 'fitting'

PS: This is a genuine question rather than a rant :)

I doubt they are fitting anything. They will be pressing a button, metaphorically speaking, in the software to enable Carplay to work. The info will all be there, it is just enabled or not. The question is whether you can do it as the videos show or whether you need the specific Volvo software / hook up to do it, hence the need for a dealer or indie specialist.

If you want to double check go to www.volvoforums.org.uk The answer will be there or start a new thread asking the question. They will know. I suspect this will be a regular question so the answer will be there already.

If you do post remember to identify the model and year. That will help them to answer correctly.

Free in Ford, Audi etc.

Joke that BMW charge extra for Apple and don't offer Android (a bigger platform than Apple) Auto.

I now have a Fiesta ST, had a few MINIs in the past. Was thinking about another Cooper or Cooper S but the lack of Android Auto put me right off.

So what is this Carplay thing again?
I know in my BMW it used to play/control music from my Iphone through usb, my Samsung Galaxy S10 won't do this. It does though through Bluetooth so I don't really see the need for extras.

S10 is an Android phone.
Android Auto will do lots of worthwhile things when you are on the move.

You can use Google Maps, much better for live traffic (re-routing options etc) or even new roads being built. It is better than any car system. Other map apps are available.

Will read new text, WhatsApp messages and you can speak to return messages.

It will read you news headlines, the weather, the wind speed at Dunbar etc etc.

Can you tell I like it!

I imagine CarPlay does all the same stuff.

No work at all involved I'd imagine it's all there good to go and just needs activation. Seems like another example of BMW charging for anything possible rather than include as standard.

Mrs has it in her Audi and I have it in my SEAT not any charge for having it either.

Car play is a very useful update to the incar entertainment

Long term it could be cost saving aswell

My mate didn't get sat Nav in his new car as was 2k more so just got car play (well was included)

You plug in your phone and it uses apps to function

I use the Google maps app (you can download the maps aswell for offline if you don't want to use data)

Music you can stream through if you don't want to use what's already there

Calls standard go through it

Txts can aswell.. dictate them back and it converts to txt format .. reads out your txts If you wish

My cars currently dont have it

My next car to replace one of them I'm aiming to get it .

In my world CarPlay = Waze. Not sure when I last used my in car sat nav. I prefer to listen to radio so don’t have any music apps (yes I was born in the last century). CarPlay pops my text or calendar invites but haven’t tried them yet. One of these days, it shows a Skype/Teams screensharing and I think that will be interesting (and distracting)

PS: Volvo is £300 while BMW is £100 annual ... both taking the proverbial
