Hey guys,

My irons should arrive on monday. The clubs I've got so far came with no maintenance instructions. I know many on here will just throw their sticks in the boot and zoom off to play. And others will keep theirs in theIr club locker.

I'm not a member yet and want to look after my sticks especially as I have a bit more protruding as they are all longer shafts. I was thinking of getting iron headcovers (just for commuting before you shoot me) and looking for tips on how to best care for my kit.

Thanks in advance,

Tiger :D

I give my clubs a really good clean once a week including wiping the grips down to cleaning every groove on each club. It sounds like a lot but who cares when you have shiny clubs after 6 months. :)

Mine go straight into the sink when I get home after every game. Cool water not hot as hot water can cause the glue in the hosel to weaken, then I use a nylon washing up brush to go over the club face and finally wipe down the shafts. Once a month I use a nail brush and hot soapy water on the grips and this keeps them lovely and tacky or use Yes grip wipes. They are really good.Mine look as good as the day I bought them and I know I'll get more cash if I trade them in.

I tend to clean the faces most weekends especially on the short irons and wedges at this time of year and then usually once a fortnight in the summer. I tend to give the grips a clean every two weeks throughout the year. I see nothing wrong with plastic headcovers if you want to keep your clubs looking smart although I find them a pain to get off and on especially when new or wet so I tend to give up after a couple of rounds and just have my irons loose in the bag

I had my last set of irons for 17 years and they were cleaned maybe a dozen times - in very hot water. They are now in the loft, still look good and, more importantly, still usable.
I find a good spit on the club face, wipe it clean on the towel and clean out the grooves with a tee.
I never sell my clubs on so I'm never going to wrap them in cotton wool.
