Played today in captains day, first year at my current club. Turned up this morning unsure of format expecting some fun.
Turns out our current captains a sadist! :-).
The only fun was 3 balls for hitting the par 3 7th green very generous I must say and holing the putt for a share of 2's pot made it even better.
However the course set up was as extreme as possible every tee back back back! All pins positions on slopes greens set at 10 on stimpmeter it felt like we were playing a US Open style set up, if you were the wrong side of the hole a 2 putt was an escape!
Ended up with 33points which I was quite happy with containing a OOB ricochete of a unhelpfully branch and 6!! 3 putts.
How does everyone elses fun days go?

I once organised a 'Greenkeepers Revenge' 9 hole charity event.
Left them to it and boy did they have fun.

Holes cut on bunker lips and steep slopes, amazing forfeits eg 10 shot penalty if all team players balls were not on the fairway on one hole, playing holes one handed etc.

Great fun though [I think]

33 points with an OOB is hardly brutal. Do you normally score 40+ points?

No I played very solid drove it great hitting 14/19 tee shots just where I wanted. Even made bogey 5 with OOB.
Just i was very surprised at set up, very similar apparently to how top Yorkshire amateur found it couple of weeks ago in the Yorkshire rose bowl.

our captains comp is a 36 hole event played over a weekend and is not billed as a FUN comp but one of the major comps and the course is set accordingly the captains drive in comp IS a fun event and a shotgun start stableford with prizes galore.

Seems how it is here. Just different to previous expieriences and not what I was expecting. Was good challenge though.

did you not come off thinking why cant they prepare the course like this week in week out,at my previous club the captains comp was the best the course was ever prepared and when they invited every one and their dog from neighbouring courses, left a sour taste in the mouth when for the rest of the year the only did the basics.

We have a so called fun day for charity tomorrow, the format pairs Texas Scramble with a twist. Basically for your tee shots, your opponents choose your worse drive of the 2 then you play normal texas scramble from there. I have already apologised to my playing partner that he's going to be playing from parts of the golf course he didnt know even existed lol

Ours is usually set up pretty fairly to be honest. It use to be AM or PM with a bit of food after the round and all back in the evening for the prizes. This year its PM only and you now have to get changed and sit down in shirt and tie to a formal dinner. It seems a lot of people are giving it a miss for that reason.

A shame as it should be one of the must play dates on the calendar but it is perhaps a reflection of the captain this year. I accept his wife has been ill but he seems to be rarely there especially at weekends and a lot of people don't seem to know who he is. Not a good reflection.

i cant fathom some people on these pages, what difference does it make if you have to wear a shirt and tie in the clubhouse,i think it is part of the etiquette of golf to show respect in the clubhouse and its not like they make you wear a special blazer and badge like most clubs did when ever you entered the club house.

The point being a lot of members aren't interested in getting dressed for dinner. Many have other factors like family etc and so don't want to play 4 hours of golf and then be ties to another 2 hours at the club having a formal dinner. I play a lot of club matches which all use to have formal meals after. The club has introduced a brunch/lunch before hand in smart casual. It has been very popular and other clubs have done it for the return leg. A few drinks and chips and sarnies after, speeches and everyone can be on their way.

I've no issue personally but a lot, and I mean a lot, of people aren't playing for this reason. Also, a lot of players prefer morning rounds so again can spend the rest of the day doing other things. With the AM shotgun they had a chance to participate.

It just seems that the captain has changed it on a whim to suit himself which of course a perogative of the post but he does seem to be out of touch with the consensus of the members. The formal dinner has its place and I guess Captains Day is one of those but it does seem to be preclusive to a lot of people and I've never known them struggle to get a full field before

On a whim?! You said his wife was ill, discussion closed surely.

Jesus wept there are more important things than captains day at the golf club!!

To be honest, the way you describe it doesn't sound as much 'fun' as it should be, but sounds no different to most setups on standard 'Open' events where they can be pretty brutal. Normally the Captain's day is a decent event to win so they generally wouldn't set the course easy and have a 28 h/capper win.

I once organised a 'Greenkeepers Revenge' 9 hole charity event.
Left them to it and boy did they have fun.

That sounds like a great idea.... just trying to think of what crazy things they could get away with...... :p

played a greenkeepers revenge once, I believe 14 of 18 holes were even cut on the greens lol, fun for a one off but could seriously put you off the game for life if played too often
