Hi guys, went out sunday and played my second ever 18 hole.Without a doubt the club that served me best was my 50deg gap wedge with 6deg bounce.Chipping and pitching were a breeze with it,and I am now thinking about replacing my sand and lob wedges with low bounce alternatives, but will this make them less usable from bunkers? Cheers!

Depends on your technique the act of opening the face of your wedge increases the amount of bounce, if you are good technically you will be able to hit any iron out of the bunker

In hard wet sand, fine, but in softer sand, you may need more bounce. Depends on your technique and ability thoiugh. Seve could use a 5 wood from greenside bunkers.

I have a lob wedge with 6 degrees of bounce and I couldn't hit it out of dry sand anywhere near as well as my sand wedge (with 14deg) when I had a go.
Lots of people use them though.

R3, we might need to look for a 64* wedge (or more loft!!)if we get stuck in this bunker at The Addington!!!

Look forward to playing golf with you, hopefully not in any of those though!! :D

My 56 deg sand wedge 12 deg bounce, is much easier to get out of deep pot bunkers with soft sand on links courses than my old 60 deg with 6 deg of bounce ever was.

However I can get out of shallow parkland bunkers at my other course with 50 deg gap wedge, more compacted sand so no need for any bounce.

My 52 and 58 wedges have 8 degree of bounce and both are fine out of bunkers. You do need a good technique with face open, otherwise they would dig in to soft sand. I changed recently to this bounce as we have nice tight firm turf, and had trouble chipping with more bounce.

I don't mind those, smack a 5 iron into the bank in front of it, a mile up in the air and plop down in gimmie distance :D

Looking forward to it here too (apart from leaving home about 4am to get there in time!!). The way I'm going it might be my first proper game of the year!

I have a spare lob wedge, Taylor Made RAC with low bounce and find it tough to use in fluffy sand. Then again, I am a "digger". I think very few players use a shallow enough angle of attack to use a low bounce lob wedge in a bunker.

It's a different story of course from turf, especially on tighter lies.
