At the moment im 16, shooting around +20 consistently, and within 2.5 years time i want to get down to a 4 handicap ( the requirements for a golf college) even if i dont become a tourpro, i would like to become a proffesional. I will soon be getting lessons, and entering comps etc. Can i do it? Cheers. Also what other ways are there to becoming a golf pro, teaching assistant etc if i couldn't go the college route? cheers.

That 24hrs of practice your are doing, well you need to be looking at whats not good about your game and be practicing/working on those areas. In order to do that you need to be keeping stats eg number of putts, FIR, GIR, it's not how long you practice but what you practice. You will also need regular lessons from a good Pro. Tell him what your trying to do, he would be the best person to advise you and give you a honest assessment of your game as it progresses. There are lots of very good young players around who have to same ambitions you have so you will need to work very hard and not only on your golf.

Good Luck.

Apart from getting down to 4, you also need O level English and Maths. Can you do that?
You'll also need to get a job at a golf club that has been authorised for training purposes where you will have to work a minimum of 30 hours per week for the 3 years training period. Can you do that?
You'll also have to pass the 36 hole playing test.
And it costs around £1500 per year to do the course, payable in advance at the start of each year.

I guess what I'm saying is there's more to it than just practicing.
First thing you need to do is cure your slice....fast.
Good luck

Okay well a lot of that practise at the moment is from within a hundred yards and in, as i figured that is the most important part at the moment to lower my handicap, i go out on the course last on weekdays and just drop constant balls around the green etc, although i do go to the range when the weather is awful and work on the long game etc i will have a lesson a week and work on it affter. cheers

or be an elite amateur, turn pro and win a tournament, as Bob says cure the slice fast, a power fade will suffice.

I hope you are fixing all your pitch marks on the greens with this constant battering of balls in from 100 yards out! ;)

what sort of standard of tournament do you need to win?, and about the slice, i had 250 balls at the range yesterday and worked out what was wrong, i have to aligne the club up to the ball slightly more on the heel, then on the backswing feel as if im swinging outside not in and on the impact feel as if im turning the club over, wouldn't of been able to fix it without the help by u guys on the other thread, cheers.

Good luck with your quest hope you can achieve your goals as already mentioned lots to it and make sure you get your o levels (well gcse') in the mean time. Keep us posted with your progress.

okay well im pretty safe with english, but il have to revise hard for maths, however a lot of the golf collleges now let u resit your GCSE's if they are not up to par.

my daughter had pretty much the same dreams as yourself, got accepted to Golf College but didn't get the grades, worked so hard to get the grades needed for this year & is on target to be told, well even though you have achieved what is required we are still not letting you on the course as the work will be to hard. Pretty much because she has bad Dyslexia she's not even going to be given a chance. So with Teaching Pro route seemly blocked off forever she will probably have to get some kind of job she has no passion for which has enough free time to still practice golf.

250 balls on the range doesn't constitute a fix. If you've got lessons coming up, do yourself a favour and stop trying to fix it yourself as all you are probably doing is compensating for faults. If you want a career in golf you need to start with a solid base which rarely comes from teaching yourself.

How many golf colleges are there?
And how long have you been playing golf?
i believe there is about 5 in england, and i started when i was 8 and played for 3 years at chart hills, a course that faldo designed, when i was 11 i was shooting in the low 90's round there, then stopped for some unknown reason and started properly again about 4 months ago, although i played when i was 12/13/14 it was no where near enough about twice a month, now my heart is back in it and really wanna do well. Back then i was so good around the greens, could side spin it from pitch shots etc, now im trying to get it all back.

MiniTIGERS95 - I was once in your position and worked as an assistant pro. Sadly my parents couldn't afford the fees to put me through the PGA course and I drifted away. I got down low enough and wasn't a natural golfer and so it can be done. However it took a lot of sacrifices in terms of my free time and hanging around with my mates. I also bunked off most of the 5th form having taken and passed my English a year early to work at the shop (not a recommended practice and stay and get as many qualifications as you can).

I was lucky that my pro was very gracious with his time and knowledge and we had a strict practice regime plus the freedom in summer to work in the shop and then play in the evening. I think if I was going to be pragmatic I'd say you need to be down much lower very quickly this season and then continue chipping away to have any chance of making 4 by the time you want to start the course. If you don't get there don't panic. Poulter was a late starter and he has done OK. I think if you can focus equally between school work, getting down low enough and be strong enough to ignore invites out from your mates then you can definitely do it. Good luck to you

But i didn't teach myself as such, just watched some videos on youtube of a pro teaching and followed the steps?

But who's telling you that YOU are doing it right. In my opinion you need someone to be telling you what to do with your swing. I can almost guarantee that you aren't doing what you think you are doing (I'm speaking from experience here). Youtube videos are great for general tips but aren't necessarily specific to you. There may be things you are doing right that you inadvertently change by trying to do something else. Doing it the way you are doing it and practicing as much as you are will get you down a to a certain level but in my opinion, unless you have a massive amount of natural talent, it won't get you where you need to be.
