Can a complete novice become a golf pro with 10,000 hours of practice?

10,000 hours!!!

That's over 2 years if he practices 12 hours a day every single day!

I'd have to say not possible based on defaulting the mortgage and having his house repossessed first! :)

It looks like he's being very strict on his definition of a pro- he mentions the 125 places on the PGA Tour? That's a tall order, I'd simply applaud him for winning enough money to pay his bills.

If he has someone willing to support him then YES. Moreso if he belongs to a decent club.

"The Dan Plan will take six hours a day, six days a week, for six years. He is keeping diligent records of his practice and progress. People who study expertise say no one has done quite what Dan is doing right now."

From the article it sounds like he's surrounded by money so it should be no problem. The son of Acushnet (Titleist) is a very good tour pro now... money is king in this game. Jason Bohn did it successfully after winning $1 million.

There is talent and there is knack.
Examples: Rory, tiger, Greg Norman.. talent. Jim furyk, Lee Trevino, jack Nicklaus, knack.
Both can be successful but knack tends to have less variation in shotmaking. All in my opinion of course.

I can't see how it can possibly work the way they are doing it atm.

To only work on 1' putts, then 2', then 5' etc etc. teaches nothing about golf, the game, and is just a measure on how much mind numbing boredom this guy can take.

Golf is a creative game, all 6 of those guys mentioned have/had huge amounts of talent. IMO Trevino is probably the most naturally talented of the lot of them. He wasn't taught from a young age, by a team of teachers with loads of back up. He was totally self taught, and he learned how to put the ball in the hole, in order to win the money.

Unless they change the regime, all they are doing is paying a guy to repeat physical exercise, not learn to play golf.

Using that definition, just completing the hours is going to be a success.

But, imo, learning to play golf is so much more.

Trevino hit a big out to in fade all his days, he won each of the majors twice except for the mastes which eluded him, Augusta being known as a place where many shot types and shapes are needed. Not detracting from him but he only really hit the fade and nothing else.
