Ah so you’re an ex-squaddy. That explains that.
Can't do it can you separate your view from the fact not everyone deserves tarnishing with the same brush..

All it explains is I've seen first hands different environments and the reasons why we shouldn't all be tarnished the way you do. But crack on fella with your insular views that's mean we're all one and the same because of a past transgression.

Did you want some salt to go with that chip on your shoulder

Now that is funny, well to me after watching a YT vid tonight about a black guy getting pulled from the police and him having a go at them, and the very first thing they said was "have you got a chip on your shoulder" It's such a crass "go to" cliche. Come on, think of something more original that that

As another ex-squaddie, I’ll give you another cliche, “walk a mile in my shoes” until then you’re just another bystander who should be thankful you’ve got people like Fish, LP, Wolf, Dewsweeper, Val, Fragger and many others on here who are proud to have served Queen and Country to give numpties like you a voice.

To be fair, you've got to have some sympathy for Kell. He's an obvious product of bigotry and extremism that was prevalent in Northern Ireland. He was born 20-ish years after Bloody Sunday yet is an example of how a person can turn out after being drip fed to the extent that anything associated with the armed forces has to be hated. And it is hate he displays, although he will tell you it is intelligent thought. There is no balance to his diatribe, and no recognition of the good the armed forces do.

He said himself he has no respect for the armed forces at all. Perhaps if he read of the Mercy Flights in Bosnia, or of the Army defending an Afghan village from the Taliban, or of the number of times the Navy has defended cargo ships from Somali pirates he might think differently. But perhaps, typically of a product of bile he will continue to spout bile.

No doubt he will say, as he already has, that you have to be a product of Northern Ireland to understand Northern Ireland. Understanding it is one thing but perpetuating it as he does is something else. I grew up in Ireland in the 70's and early 80's. I worked X-border from the late 90's, and managed a business X-border until late 2015. I've met many Kells, interviewed many of them for jobs in Northern Ireland, and I've met many who have learned to let go, and that understand that if you don't you will stay rooted in the past. Your opinions will be 'old fashioned' opinions and do little to reflect the truth of today, only the truth of yesterday.

The armed forces does have some things it shouldn't be proud of, and the second Bloody Sunday inquiry makes it very clear where the majority of the blame lies. But the armed forces have done far more good. And if you're willing to shelter under the shroud of protection they provide you owe them something in return. But no doubt the bile will say they're paid to do that.

For all the rights and wrongs that are posted on here and elsewhere. It is said “because we can”. We live in a democratic world which is supported by the armed forces of this country.

Lest we forget.

I was going to ask his age and at what age he came over to England, but then I couldn’t be arsed as I already guessed I’d done a couple of tours in some of the most troubled times before he was born, so I knew his reply of ‘I was born & brought up in NI’ held little or no substance to the subject matter as he couldn’t personally relate or debate on those specific situations he chose to bring into this topic.

As you rightly state, he’s a product of what’s wrong with so many like him that are/were drip fed hatred towards the armed services, he probably believes that PIRA has gone and they handed in and decommissioned all their weapons and that Adams was never at the top table of PIRA and Corbyn never met with the terrorists, and if he does, then he’s even a bigger fool than what I have down for.

Yea I was definitely dripfed hatred towards the armed services. That’s exactly the world I grew up in, as did everyone in the unionist community. Good knowledge of NI there...

He said himself he has no respect for the armed forces at all.

I don’t think I did but for the interest of balance I’ll say it again that this is not an accurate portrayal of my views.

I am against an all encompassing respect for the armed forces simply because they are the armed forces.

Hopefully you will never have a requirement for their services, unlike The PEOPLE of NI on both sides of the divide (not the politicians) who requested our assistance.

Luckily having done 4 tours there I learnt that there were more who respected and appreciated our efforts than the minority of bigots that couldn't see the harm they were causing.

That’s why we still sell Poppies.....folk are still in the firing line...sent there by politicians not fit to lace their boots...

It is probably a simple fact that a lot of the money that once went to the British Legion now goes to Help for Heroes. Same sort of help but a doubling up of the administration costs so less money goring to where it should go.

I almost feel like you’re calling me a bigot which would be hilarious.

I’m not sure about this.

Donations given directly to the Legion, of which I am a member, are always used within their own Legion Branch and regional area across the country who are then responsible for helping those veterans and service men and women in need with the money they receive.

Due to the scale, if anything I would expect H4H’s to be helping out the Legion, not the other way around.

I have an all encompassing respect for the fire and ambulance services but quite accept not everyone of them has done their job properly

There are a number of conflicts this country has been involved in since the World Wars when I did not agree with our involvement. Nevertheless I will be eternally thankful that there are men and women who are prepared to risk their lives to protect me, my family, my friends, my country and our way of life. I am sure in some of the more recent conflicts that some of the service personnel questioned our involvement and I am thankful for their professionalism that they went anyway. I believe those who died in such conflicts deserve our respect. It was not their choice that they went to war.
I do believe that in the World Wars, in particular WW2 we had no choice but to go to war to protect ourselves and liberate others. The fact that we can have this discussion today is testament to our victory.
To those who choose not to pay their respects to the fallen for a moment once a year, well thats your choice, but I would ask “would you rather those servicemen and women had not fought for us?” These were real people and they really did die and they did so for us.
I am thankful that my Grandfather returned from WW1 and my Dad returned home from WW2. If they hadn’t I wouldn’t be here today. I know many families were not so lucky. But I do know we are all lucky to have people like them on our side.
To those who say enough is enough and after 100 years we should stop with rememberence, I would ask when do you stop being grateful for the way of life you have enjoyed?
So I for one will buy my poppy and pay my respects and be thankful that is all I have had to do. Thankful that I grew up in peacetime and I did not have to face or witness the horrors that those poor people went through.

Thinking about it your are right in about in one sense. I know on a personal basis I have upped my donations to The British Legion and HFH may have made many more aware of the need to increase donations to charities that help their aims.

Lots of funny in your comments when there's nothing funny about it. May have to work harder to get a reaction.

You’re incredibly intolerant of views you disagree with. Is that the sort of freedom people died to defend?
Absolutely. He has the freedom to express his view on the subject, how ever strong he holds them, just like you do to hold yours. Why cant you just accept that instead of pulling out the 'intolerant ' card.
