Callaway New Clubs

I saw a really interesting piece by Clarkson about Audi doing this a few years ago. It was pushed by a new bloke there who saw it as a way to move Audi on to a new level. He persued agents and gave Audi's to their clients at really low, knock down lease rates, offered them as transport for awards nights etc. He basically got young and fashionable celebs being seen regularly in Audi's. Audi's sales rocketed, not just because of this of course but Jezza highlighted this key point in making Audi's a car that younger people with money wanted to be seen in.

I don't blame Callaway for this. This approach is peanuts compared to a mass marketing campaign. This is marketing by stealth. Less obvious than an advert in a paper but just as effective.

It drives my club pro mate mad.

He spends £15k on stock and they throw in a few dozen balls. Then sees noncy footballer tweeting about his "sweet" new bats given to him by Taylor Made (as it was then)

I still have a set of 1980's technology Titleist DCI irons. They have weaker lofts and slightly shorter shafts than the latest offerings, but loft for loft they still hit the ball the same distance as modern clubs. It's just that you might need an 8-iron instead of a Pitching Wedge, because their specs are actually pretty similar. A lot of the so called improvements in performance is largely a con to make you think that you are hitting the ball further with a given numbered club!

But that noncy footballer is reaching 300,000+ followers with his tweet, many of whom will then re-tweet. Great advertising for the sake of some free clubs. V painful for the pro but that is the way of celebrity in the modern era. Those who can afford things get them given for free. Google what Oscar nominees get in their "goody bags" if you want to get yourself really angry.

Not me that is angry. 👍

I find it easier to only look at what's on the market when i'm actually in the market for a new club (i.e. every few years) that way you don't see how many sets/drivers etc have been produced in the time between changing. I couldn't accurately tell you the line up of any manufactures sets right now because right now it's not important to me. Next year I'll be in the market for a driver and fairway, i'll look then, try them out then buy what's available in my budget, no marketing needed thanks. TM/C'way etc could save themselves £1,000's! ha ha.

Taylormade seemed to do far more marketing of new clubs, so was more in your face with a new release. They also gave their stuff new names. Callaway do seem to be brining out more these days but use the same names for stuff so I dont think people are as aware. Love both companies - and great for golfers who pick up 2nd hand gear!

I love the fact it looks like the 09 burner with a carbon crown, but they have opted for a shorter shaft for control.

I had a TM 09 Burner with a rather long shaft and I loved it. The long shaft almost forced you to swing smoothly and the ball went a long way. Unfortunately some low life scum broke into my cars and nicked my clubs and I wasn't able to replace it because it was now obsolete. I tried the equivalent next model, Speed Burner as I remember, and couldn't get on with it at all Spent a while looking on eBay for a secondhand one, but nobody seemed to be selling them (I wonder why?). I used an old Callaway driver for a while, then bought a secondhand TM R1 which was OK, if not particularly forgiving. Shows that not all new models are actually better!
