Caddies lining up putts

Rules are rules and if they are not being broken then I cant see the issue.

You sound like an MP sorry for the outragous insult

I know it will never happen and they will never be banned but what is there to stop someone employing a sport phsycologist as a caddy, and does having the best caddy increase Tigers dominance

Wish my yearly salary was half as much as some of those bloomin "expenses claims"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Would you also expect Westwood not to ask Garcia his opinion on a 6 footer to win a point on the final green during the fourballs in the Ryder Cup?"

Opinion.....YES. - Its a Team Event, not Single Stokeplay.
Lay on Floor till he's lined up as near perfect as poss, .......NO.

Its against the ethics of the game, and 'Outside assistance' of the highest order, end of.

So Craw, you wouldnt mind if one of your Medal partner's this Saturday brought along a friend to do the same ?
And before you reply,........of course you would.

But isn't thinking and the mental side of golf part of the skill that has to be learned, making the right decisions at the right time if a caddy changes a players approach to a shot is that not a step to far.

Sorry,

You are wrong, if a playing partner of mine either in a medal or the matchplay competitions had a CADDY and had the caddy all round then no I would not or could not complain as they chose to have a caddy, just like I could have opted for a caddy.

However is a playing partners friend suddenly appeared and was not a CADDY then sadly that person would be disqualified. Its all about knowing the rules.

Hope that clarifys that point.

I was not, and am not looking for you to clarify anything, I know the rules. - I was just making the point that I would change them.

If my memory serves me correct I believe Faldo had a Shrink on the bag playing in the 2000 US Open. I remember some lame joke about him carting a couch around in his tour bag.

Craw: I dont think anyone who is reading this thread is in any doubt at all that its within the rules.
Otherwise they wouldnt do it.

What we are debating is whether its within the spirit that Golf is intended, and that it can very possibly be deemed 'outside assistance', and therefore shouldbreak the rules

Drivers & clubs get outlawed, so should this, and I dont think for a minute any of them would go running off to form another Tour.

:D

I was at the Irish Open and to be honest Rock didnt take any longer putting then any other player. I dont see the harm in it once it doesnt slow up play.

I was there too. The leading group where 2 holes behind the 3 in front of them - yes it was slow but I dont think the speed of play was much to do with putting. They took their time over club selection.
Personally I just laughed at the caddy lieing down and using the flagstick to get show the line without touching the line. No problem in my eyes - perhaps the TV coverage made it seem longer.

That was bordering on the ridiculous at the weekend, Rocks caddy laying on the floor to line up his bosses putt is laughable.

Bones McKay (Phil Mick's caddy) is equally as annoying standing over the ball with his imaginary putter in his hand.....knob! Mickleson even has to move him out of the way sometimes so he can get a look at the line!!!!!!

dont really see a problem, proiding it doesn't make play slow. caddies help with club selection, type of shot required etc already, its only an extension to also help with putting.

Its a fair option thats available to everyone. personally, i couldnt stand it, i hardly ever take advice from a partner in matchplay. id rather make a decision and trust myself and not have a second opinion confusing me. if a player feels he benefits from a second opinion then that's their choice

The OP isn't (I think) complaining about getting advice, more that once a line has been chosen, the player should be able to align himself and his putter to the chosen line without being told by bernie the bolt to go left a bit, right a bit, no left a bit more, yep, that is it, you are now on the line we chose, just hit it.

You're correct Murph, what Rocks caddy was doing was waiting til Rock was taking his practice swing with the putter and telling him where he needed to point. At that point and once he was satisfied he was aligned properly, he walked away while Rock addressed the ball and took his putt.

Its lame to say the least!

Draw a bloody big line around the ball like we all do to align instead of using your caddy you great big poofter!

I'd go further as I cannot see any reason for a caddie to even be on the green other than to tend a flag - and that only takes one caddie out of the group.

No problem with caddies providing advice on the line but think telling a pro hes lined up correctly should be outlawed.
As stated on the LPGA tour caddies line up wood and iron shots--what tosh.

Pros should lined up their own shots.

While at the Irish Open I noticed Monty's caddie on every green shouted to the crowd to stand still or to be quiet. I noticed after the 2nd shout, Monty was ready to putt. This must be in his pre shot routine. The only hole he didn't do it was the 72nd by which time it didnt matter. I agree with Bid D that Robert Rock didn't take that long over putts.
What really did surprise me during the weekend golf was the speed some of the players walked at. Some of them were so slow the greens needed cutting before they reached them. Sunday was the only day which some of the groups lost any ground. I stayed at the 9th green most of Thursday and Friday and the flow of play was great.

Does anyone know where next years Irish Open is being played?
