right, decided that enough was enough, quit my job this monring. Going to return to uni to complete a PHD. I decided that money was no longer everything and I would take a drastic cut and try something i think i might enjoy.

Given the current climate am i mad? I keep going round in circles all the time thinking ive made a massive mistake

Looking forward to getting back on the golf team again, get some serious competitions and pratice in again tho!

Depends on your circumstances mate.

Have you got dependants? A mortgage, outstanding loans?

If so, you're not right in the mallet!!!

If you're young free and single, live at home with ma and pa who are willing to finance you to a certain extent, then go for it.

You're mad.

But that's not the end of the world.

Nowt wrong with giving up the job and going back to college, If you've thought it through, worked out your long yerm budget. And making sure you can affored it

But giving up any job on a whim is a bit self indulgant.

I'm sure you'll get it working for you.

Good luck.

Flippin heck Dingle, you can't say 'only' and '£202k' in the same sentence!
Why not start your own business with some of it?

In 2001 I was working for Argos and getting an earful from some snotty boot at the top of a 4 high block of flats because we couldnt get her wardrobe thru her wee nasty door. My mate went to get a screwdriver to take her door off and she was banging on about how she would get us sacked if there was a scratch on the wardrobe or her property.. TCALSS

I let go of the wardrobe and it folded like a pack of cards down the stairwell. She stood there open mouthed and I said

'I can't remember telling my careers officer at school that when I grow up I want to take a pile of shite off a stuck up cow whilst knocking my pan in working for Argos. Good luck building your wardrobe ya F****** ******'

I left that day and my boss said 'What else can YOU do?'

I got another job, worked hard and moved up and on.

It wasn't easy. I was on £9,300 in my first sales job at the age of 31 but it was my apprenticeship and I was never gonna fail.

Good luck on your new career path.

You’re a brave man, I have spent since 2003 qualifying for my job and still not completed this has included two degrees and one MA. I work as a lecturer and luckily since 2006 this has all been funded by the College, they have now offered to give me time off and fund my PhD if I want to go for it. Have you thought about doing similar, get a job in local College and teach part time to fund your study.

Good man seizing the day and quitting your job, if you hadn’t done it your would always think “what if”

That's what I would do if I could. I am only 4 euros an hour now...

...but then an eighteen year old won't get much for anything.

Only got one more week to work and then I'll be off to school again YAAAAY.

hey sorry i obviously should have explained myself more. I have moved to a funded PHD where i will receive a monthly wage. I am still young and feel that I should attempt it now. The job i do you cant walk in off the streets and pick up my line of work.

The wayy i see it is i was unhappy in my job, wouldnt settle down where i was so there was nothing for me, i just didnt see the point of living life like that. As much as people may look down on them, I believe PHDs will open doors for people hopefully!

I am behind you and applaud you for having the bottle to do what many of us would love to do. You are still young and there is plenty of time to earn a good living.look at the rest of us:Clones who tow the line 9-5 to afford a house, car and 2 weeks in some Spanish doss house, overdrawn and just waiting for the next bill to fall through the letterbox. Meanwhile the country is full of lazy so and so's and other shall we say economic migrants (Spongers)who are making a very good living from sitting on their jackseys and holding out their hands every two weeks.
Good luck with your PHd, and good luck for the future.

Fair play to you mate. If you got a roof over your head and can afford to feed ur family then the next most important thing is to enjoy yourself. i fell sorry for those who hate their job because its a bit of a vicious circle and trying to get out of it isnt easy.

Hope you done the right thing.
2 years ago I owned a sucessful small business, but due to the construction bust I closed the company. By chance my wife lost her job 2 days after my redundancy. We have a massive morgage, lots of bills and a child (now 3). The redundancies devistated us but we decided to take the oppertunity for me to go back to collge full time.
I am now a mature (30yo) student, about to go into final year with a mid 80's average. And a good CV. Hopefully I will get the chance to persue a Phd, as I would love to lecture and do research.

The redundancies made me realise there is more to life than money, we may be skint but life is really good. Its a great decision and one I am pleased I made.

cheers guys, I appreciate your positive responses! I think it leads for exciting times and imagine the extra time I will have to practice my golf! haha!

My area of study/'Expertise' is forensics. Im currently a forensic investigator at the moment but i wont go into it as I will bore you guys. The money will keep me ticking over and I think i will enjoy the new challenges the phd will provide! I wud also like to be a 'dr' providing all goes well.
