Hi Guys i'm new to the forum and have joined to get a bit of advice if theres any available. I'm a sixteen year old and have been playng on/off for about 4 years. I've never been a very consistent golfer nor have i spent copius amounts of time on the course.

I'm in need of a new set of clubs and was unsure to go for. My budget is £200, not a massive amount but for the amount i play is probably justified, a Ben Sayers M7 set has been recommended as has a Ram FX. I've heard mixed reviews and would love somebody to give me their opinion, maybe if there are any better offers for different brands out there it would be something to consider?

Cheers Guys i hope you can help :)

Hi Andy,
Wecome to the Forum. You don't say where you are or give many details. My advice would be to have a look and see if the pro at your local club has any second hand sets, or if there is an American Golf or similar near you, have a look there too. Try before you buy though and get a feel for them first.
Good luck.

What Clive said really.

But if you want a cheap set of (good quality) irons for cheap - I'm reducing the price of these: to £80 plus postage.

:D

Hi Andy, where in the country are you??
As it's been said, see a local pro at a course to see if he deals in 2nd hand sets and make sure you try them before buying them.
If your near the west midlands I know a guy who deals in 2nd hand clubs and will happily let you try before you buy.

Good luck. :)

You can get Di7s rather cheap these days, great clubs for a beginner ;)

Also, congratulations on spelling 'advice' correctly. Twice in two days it's been spelled wrong in various posts and it's been bugging my teats.

Andy, I wouldnt bother with any of the 'new' 'starter' sets or the like in AG or similar, you would be a whole lot better finding yourself a decent set of 2nd hand irons, add a Putter, and perhaps a 2nd hand 3 Wood, and away you go.
Would be easy to do for £200.

Have a look on ebay, and as a newbie, a set of forgiving irons would be ideal, they may not be everyone's 'cup of tea', but I played with Ping Zing2 irons for many years, off a 12 H/Cap, and they were very forgiving and very powerful clubs.
Easy to pick up a good set of 9 irons for £130/150, get them custom fitted (for Free) at Ping in Gainsborough, - even a local Pro might help in that respect, and they would be fine for years.

I also carry a Calaway War Bird 4 wood, which is years old, but yet still hit further than some hit their Drivers, so again, they are a very powerful club, and you could pick one up for perhaps £30 online.

Again, - dont get sucked into 'new & shiny', as I'll promise you, it wont be any better, and you'll get less for your money.

Hope that helps.

Id recommend ebay like some of the others have mentioned above.
I got some Mizuno MX17s off there about 4 months ago for £70 quid, which are quite forgiving and easy to hit, even though i was looking for some old Titliest 981s.

Just make sure you check the feedback of the seller, and also if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Also avoid sets on eBay that don't have pictures of the actual clubs (i.e. the ones that use stock pictures from the manufacturer).

This allows you to see what condition they're in and also cuts down dramatically on the risk of getting some fakes.

I picked up my new set of Mizuno MP57's for £140 quid a few weeks ago and they're nearly brand new (and go for over £300 second hand on Golfbidder)...There are some real bargains to be had if you're willing to be patient.

I was in American Golf in Slough and Watford over the last few weeks and saw 2 set in Slough and 3 sets in Watford of the Taylor Made Burner Plus irons. They were all 2nd hand and I remember thinking they were crazy cheep for this/last years irons. I have not hit them but they review well.

Tell us a little about your game though please. Do you have trouble gettin the ball up, do you have a problem with distance, what? are you just talking about irons or are you looking for woods too within that £200?

Al

OH sorry, welcome to the forum.

Hi guys, i've updated my details. I'm from Birmingham. I dont have a handicap to be quite honest, a result of playing nomadically at various clubs dependent on costs and where my friends would play. I enjoy golf and find my driving on the fairway decent( mainly because i have spent most of my time playing at driving ranges in the past) my general iron game needs improvement as does putting. My distance is alright but would like more height using irons to accompany that, would also love a bit of backspin.

I have had a 'break' from golf for about 18 months as a result of growing out of clubs and other factors, however i have decided to give it another go. I always enjoyed the game and would be lying if i said it wasnt helped by watching the excitement of the ryder cup. Given me the motivation to get back out there:)

cheers for your comments guys, sorry for being late, i was unaware of these posts and found them by searching for the title, how can i get notificatons?

Cheers for mentioning 2nd hand clubs, i hadnt thought about that. I would obviously prefer well kept yet slighty older clubs from a quality brand in comparison to something cheap and nifty.

Anybody have some good sites for 2nd hand clubs specifically as well as ebay? anything i should particularly look for?

Cheers once again guys

hey again Andy,

http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/ is a good one though they do have to make money so ebay can be cheeper but more risky, there is an bit of an art to buying golf clubs on ebay because of the rife "fake" market out there.

you are looking for "game inprover" clubs and there are ALOT of then out there. I would make a guess that there are more game inprover clubs than any other sector. Ill have a little look on golfbidder now and pick out what might be good for you.

You know what, looking at it there is nothing on there right now that would blow my mind. And I would think you may get a better deal from someone in here right now.

Ill have a quick look at ebay. I got my Wilsons for £80 about two, three years ago so there is deals out there.

edit: ok so I did not find anything on ebay today but I did remember that I was looking at there the other day.
