If you found a burgular in your house how far would you go?
I know if i had one in my house,i think i would try to be reasonable first and ask him to leave, without any risk to my family.
But if it turned nasty and he was a threat to my family it could turn in to a kill or be killed situation.
Has anyone been in this frightening situation?
Yes i am alright,lol :)

personally this is one thing i like about the good old USA, if someone is on your property you can defend by any means so to speak. In my opinion there are far to many rules and laws protecting criminals and not enough protecting the victim.

Unfortunately i have a close friend who's brother was murdered when he was awoken by a burglar while he was asleep on the sofa, as he's children were upstairs he tried to remove the burglar while they were asleep, it cost him he's life. :(

I believe I heard something the other day on the radio about the police giving people a clear out line on what is reasonable force.

I still believe Tony Martin got it right.

I agree with the American law.
As for the second part, thats the worrying bit.
Of course until were in that situation this post is speculation,i suppose adrenilin would kick in.

America defo had the right idea about this.

Had an issue few years back due to someone breaking in to my flat while we were in bed. This got a little bit out of hand and I ended up me managing to have the guy held till the police arrived which my partner phoned. Ended up more hassle than it was worth tbh as ended up having to go to court about it as they were trying to have me done for assault. In the end got away with it but was a nightmare at the time with it! Next time I'll leave a sign outside "the door open come in and help yourself" as the law makes treats you like the criminal

totally agree with this. have been burgled a number of times and would dearly love to get my hands on the little sh1ts that get away with murder....

2 burglars standing outside 2 semis at 3 in the morning.
Outside one house there is a sign.

"Trespassers will be clubbed to death by the wife, shot to death by me then eaten by my 4 Great Danes. And below that a picture of my 4 big dogs.

Next door is a sign that says
"Dear milkman. no milk for 2 weeks, gone on holiday"

Which house will they do?

Deterent is the one thing that's never talked about in this country, it's all about what to do after the act.

If the law changes to allow house owners more rights against ne'er do wells, then the scroats have to know the law has changed.

Then, if they cross my threshold, they will feel my 1 iron

Always remember a bloke that lives a few doors away was abit of a "hard man" and sumone broke into his work van and tried to steal it but it woke him up so he jumped bollock naked from his bedroom window (fractuing his foot in the process) and chased them up the street and managed to catch one of them as they drove to a dead end in the street.

He sat bollock naked on one of the lads and held him down till the police came.

The cheeky bugger tried to get him done for exposing himself and sexual assault because he claimed his genitals touched his face when he sat on him! hahah.

I turn on the electric fences after 10.00 Bob, so make sure you are not late. :D :D

I prefer the wedge on burglars, as i don't think i can get a full swing in the house with anything longer.

When you are protecting your family in your own home, i think anything goes.

Personally I think that everyone has a right to defend their property and possessions. I have a young family so I always keep my mobile by my bed to phone the police and something blunt and heavy upstairs just in case I can surprise them!!!! Main priority though will be that wife and boys are safe.

I am 16, and i think if im was the one that was awoken, i would do anything to try stop them reaching my sisters and parents.

Unfortunately it doesn't - I see the family in Manchester where the burglar died yesterday have all been arrested.

Don't know the circumstances yet but I would be on the side of 'anything goes' and 'Burglar beware'

If somebody broke into my house id really want to hurt them. People who burgle houses are scum and deserve everything they get if the home owner kills them.

Obviously the police have arrested them so they can get the full story,it doesnt mean they are in trouble yet.
As most people say its all about protecting the family.surely burgulars know that if they are caught in the act they face the consequenses.

no kids as yet so just me and our lass so if I heard someone I would just barricade the door and call the police as just not worth the risk for a few possessions. If however it happened in a few years time and have kids in the house I would do ANYTHING to protect them and deal with the consequences later.

Slightly off subject - a lady in our company was alighting from our taxi when attacked by a thug on his way home from the local pub. I went to her aid and helped the rest of our company, four middle aged couples arriving home from a dinner suited do, into the house.
Our host was paying the taxi so I went to see he was OK but found him on the pavement being kicked by the thug, his pal AND THEIR TWO GIRLFRIENDS!(What is the world coming too?)
I stepped in and sorted it out with a bit extra handed out to the original thug - he had by now given me a black eye - so I felt he was deserving of it!
We duly reported it to the police and they called at my house the following day prepared to charge me as the thug required hospital treatment!!

I am convinced if my war wound .. the black eye.. was not on show, I would have been charged!

He received a slapped wrist and a £50 fine.. a young oil worker on £50,000 a year - for assulting a middle aged lady!! Big Deal!

Would I physically attack someone who broke into my home??? And how!!

i've just read this article and it looks like some sloppy reporting.

frankly it looks like gang violence that has been reported poorly because the protecting your home against burglars story has airtime at the moment.

group of people in balaclavas fled the scene? burglars normally operate solo or pairs not as a group...

A bloke that I work with attacked a burglar in his house with a hurley stick, knocked him out, then phoned the cops. Apparently he had a very long criminal record. When giving evidence to the police he told the cop exactly what happened. To which the cop replied "So sir as you came out of the bedroom and startled the intruder, who then fell down the stairs knocking himself unconscious."

Not sure about that, there's been a trend recently in Manchester / Liverpool of "burst in robberies". Gang smash their way in and go for the high violence / fear approach to get people to hand their stuff over quickly. There was one particularly nasty case where they threatened to stab one of the children. That story will be the one in my head if I'm ever in the situation of trying to decide what reasonable force is
