Buffered or not?

No results posted today for yesterday's medal and I'm trying to work out whether I managed to buffer or not.

My current exact handicap is 12.4 and I shot a gross 88 (par 69) yesterday but that included a 10, two 8s and a 7.

The 10 was on index 13, one 8 on index 12, the other on index 1 and a 7 on index 9.

The CSS was par.

So did I managed to get into the buffer or am I finishing the season off 13?

Assuming they were all par 4 holes I reckon you will be counted as an 82 for handicapping which will be a nett 70 and in the buffer zone.

Sorry, should have said what par the holes were! Doh!

10 was on a par 5 and the 8 on index 12 was a par 5. The other 8 and the 7 were on par 4s.

the 10 becomes a 7, nett double bogey on a par-5 without a shot, the 8 becomes a 7, nett double bogey on a par-4 with a shot and the 7 does not change, since that was a nett double bogey on a par-4 with a shot. That means the corrected score for handicap purposes was a 84, nett 72, so just outside the buffer zone of 0-2 above CSS. Looks like 13, then. The buffer zone for 13 - 18 is 3 shots and you lose 0.3 per shot below CSS, so I predict you may get back to 12 soon.

The easiset way to calculate these is by stableford points. That takes care of the corrections for high scores.

CSS was 36 for you, and 34 and 35 in the buffer. You scored 33 points, so you get an increase.

Am I correct in assuming that you can't do worse than a net double bogey?

So my 10 would become a 7, one 8 would stand as would the 7 and the other 8 would become a 7. So I'd get 4 shots off which would give me the net 72.

On the positive side, I've just checked the diary and there's one more medal this season so I have one more chance to get back to 12.

The 10 was very unfortunate. One unexpectedly "good" swing produced a draw rather than my customary fade and I was in the bushes.

Found it, had a shot out sideways too, played a lovely well-struck 7 iron chip towards the front edge of the green, then.....

A cow came trundling down and my ball struck it on the kneecap - dropping the cow to the ground and sending my ball back ten yards behind me right into the middle of a bush.

Cue a drop, a horrendous bounce into a terrible lie, then clipping a tiny branch of a tree which killed it and it dropped straight into an unplayable lie again.

Hitting the cow, which eventually picked itself up and limped off, caused my brain to melt for a minute or two - mainly because I thought it'd have to be put down if I'd broken its leg - and my decision-making/course management went totally awol.

One ridiculous gravity defying 20 yard kick up the hill out of bounds on the next but one hole and my round was totally over.

On reflection, I'm pretty happy that I came even close to buffering. One more medal to try and get back down to 12 (or lower) for the winter.

I still can't get the noise out of my head that the impact of the ball on the cow's kneecap made. Awful.
