Well, got a 98 today, my first sub-100 score. Cause for celebration.

And yet I still felt disappointed. Putting was appalling again (42 putts) and short game lacking. Having gone out in 11-over par 48 I was hoping for a solid lower 90s score on the much easier back 9. Instead, 50 strokes later I just about scraped my way under 100.

So, I'm happy to have done it, but knowing there's so much to work at has left a slightly deflated feeling about what is quite a milestone.

I think it is a better thing that you actually feel as if you didn't do great and still achieved your best score, rather than achieving your best score and feeling as if you done the best you could. At least this way you know you can do even better in the future.

Surely you would rather shoot 98 and know you could do better than shoot 98 and know it's the best you could do?

Oh and well done!

Well done!
You've picked up on your 42 putts. I think that might be somewhere you could have a quick win by improving. If you can average 2 putts per hole then you'd have knocked six shots off your score and ended up on 23 (which I'm sure you'd have been happy with!). Maybe spend 10-15 mins on the putting green now and then to work on your putting? I'm guessing you had some long range putts so try to get them within three feet instead of trying to hole them every time. It makes a much bigger and easier target to aim at.

Good to shoot a PB and at least you have identified where you need to work on your game get the putter hot and sub 90 beckons, keep working at it.

If the ball is beyond 10 feet from the hole, then I'll try and get the ball as near to the hole with my first put rather than aiming to hole out, this has lessened my 3 puts and I'm more often than not averaging less than 2 puts per hole.

Don't be deflated. Enjoy the moment!

Think about what you can do when you start making nearer 36 putts.....

You'll soon do 90, I'm sure. :)

Sounds very similar to when i first broke 100. Front 9 i was flying and shot something like 44 and then proceeded to just scrape under a hundred with a 99! Since then though ive found it much easier to break 100 and do it almost every round and im sure you will too. I think its a mental barrier more than anything.

From what you keep saying, putting is clearly an issue and I would suggest a single 30 minute lesson with the pro. Get the basic right in terms of address, posture and the stroke and then get out and practice holing out regularly from 3-6 feet. If you can make a few of these and putt better because everything is working in unison then that 98 will become an 88 without too much effort
