I am currently with BT as my broadband supplier. Last month they warned that we went over our 10gb usage and if we did it again they will charge extra. They have emailed today and said that we are up to 7gb of the months usage, and I am wondering whether to look elsewhere. I have Sky and they have a no limit deal

Any thoughts or advice, bearing in mind I live in a village with only a sky dish and no optic cable

Thanks for advice

We are with sky. Over 4 mile from the exchange and getting a steady 2mb, compared to orange our previous supplier its miles better. Was only getting 512k from them.
Had no issues caused by sky themselves

Sky are crap and I never got above 2MB, now for the same price of £20 a month I get a constant 26-30MB from Virgin. I know you have no fibre optic but I wouldn't go with SKY. To add I have SKT TV and would never go with Virgin for TV LOL

I reluctantly swapped to Sky Broadband from PlusNet about 3 years ago. Very happy with PlusNet but Sky were cheaper and we needed to save the pennies.

Same speed on Sky, no problems with service (we're on Unlimited), with streaming, a PC on Steam, 2 XBoxes on Live, 3-4 iPads and other bits all running at evening peak times the speed has been fine.

Only downer is the cheapo Sky-supplied router. With some cajoling Sky may give you the settings so you can use your own. The WiFi it pretty poor so I use a separate Access Point for that.

I'm with EE and just hovering over my icon I am currently getting 43.5 Mbps :) it goes much higher than that also

I was paying £20 for SKY unlimited which was meant to be up to 20MB if I remember right. I was actually getting 2MB and loosing connection a lot. It's a real shame you can't have Virgin fibre optic as it is great. BT is quite expensive though isn't it? Maybe SKY is the way to go and I hope over the last year they have managed to speed it up a little. Even if you do only get 2MB from SKY you won't see much difference to what you have now mate.

I'm with SKY, am paying £7.50/month for the unlimited one.... get 6.6Mbps which is fine by me..... have 3 PC's and an xBox connected right now and all is good.

Did think about DOWNGRADING to the free version.... but at £7.50/month it's hardly a deal breaker.

10yrs I was with BT at £30/month..... what a con!!!!

Dunno,it's never been an issue. I don't stream films etc

Just checked -3.14 Mbps

chances are you are either of a small exchange and 8mb max (20cn) connection or a fair trek from the nearest exchange or even both :(

ring up BT and ask about unlimited bband, my mum had the same, rang them, changed her plan slightly and it was like a quid less than what she was currently paying! (upgrading is actually £3 extra according to current prices)

I was with sky and no problems at all, in fact it was quicker than my bt line (16mb with sky 14 with bt) it also was solid as a rock whereas my bt one tends to dip in speed a lot and drops out here and there.

goto http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker & see whats available to you as each exchange has different kit so you may be limited to what service providers you can use

Cheers fellas. When the effects of my large glass of port wears off I shall try and understand what you have told me and act accordingly!

Sky have always provided a great service. It's not fibre optic but it's good for stream on Netflix etc and surfing at the same time! Whenever I have encountered speed issues I've rang them up, they fiddled with whatever and its come back! I tend to download at 400kbps ish

SKY will NEVER give you your user name and password to use a different router, its the SKY router or nothing

Just moved to sky unlimited and got 1st 6 months free and then £7.50 a month and they also halved my tv package costs for the next 6 months.

Not had any issue yet and the speeds have been superb.

No complaints whatsoever from me.

Might be worth a word with them - thanks Dodger

Whoever you change to they will offer you a great deal to join. And then screw you once your initial contract runs out. You then have to decide if you can be bothered to move to get a better deal elsewhere or try and negotiate a reduced deal with your current provider.

They all do it so no one is worse than the other. But it's very frustrating and not a great advert for customer satisfaction 'come to us and the longer the stay with us the more we will screw you over'
