Breathing Question

lol - haven't heard this one for years. When a couple down in matchplay ask your opponent "do you find holding your breath during the swing helps?"

They spend that much time concentrating on their breathing their swing falls to bits... you're a very naughty man!

Yeah....I thought you could only ask this question in matchplay??

I was always told to breathe out during the whole swing as it relaxes your muscles.
I take a deep breath before I begin my takeaway and then a steady exhale during the whole swing.

There is a lot wrong with my swing but I can safely say I have nailed the breathing element of it!:whoo:

H'mm. I think you should reconsider this - as movement is all about muscle contraction, not relaxation! That's quite different to having unwanted tension though, but simply exhaling won't stop that!

I have no real idea whether I breathe or not (it's all done unconsciously), though I suspect I inhale during the back-swing and then 'grip'/brace. my diaphragm during the downswing.

i breathe out before I swing. I want to be relaxed when I swing. I watched an 18 hc golfer on a GC2 hitting balls. He had a great setup, and his swing wasn't bad either, but I could see tension on his backswing in his upper shoulders and face, so I asked do you hold your breathe when you swing and like a few on here already said he had no clue. I said go through your routine, then breathe out and expel all air then swing. After the initial crap swing and his focus on his breathing, he started to hit the ball better and felt a lot more flow to his swing.

Try it. Don't cost anything.

Isn't this a classic ruse used by some in matchplay to put the opposition off and get them focussing on that. No idea what I do and to be honest don't care as long as I keep doing it long enough to get round and beyond

I did this on the tee at the weekend and topped my shot straight into the pond in front of the tee!

It must of been worth it for the laugh you got.

PS. Unlike a good drive, I hope you didn't follow through :)
