I've come so close after the front nine, 47, 48, 49, 50. Only to go and blow it on the back nine. I've even come as close as 103.

Now I know this may not seem much to you on here, but I'm relly starting to get ticked off by this milestone.

Everyone, including my pro, reckons that when it happens, 90 will be easily achieved.

What advice do you have? How did you do it? Was it a eureka moment, or just, wow, it's happened.

My ecclectic best is a 73, 3 over par on Scoresaver 2. So I know that I can do it when it all hangs together on the same day.

Re: Braking 100

First time I broke 100 was when I made a total horlics of the first 2 holes. Stopped worrying about the score and the pars started rolling in. Needed a 5 on the last hole, par 4, to break 100 and managed a 4 for an overall 98.

Re: Braking 100

Might be a cliché, but I found that playing percentage golf reduced my scores significantly-the long par 4 which is SI 14 or less, play it as a par 5, take a 5w or even a 5i off the tee to keep it in play.

I see from your bag you have a 52 and 60 degree, does your standard set contain standard SW as you should carry something in the 56 degree area in my opinion.
Still on wedges, how well do you hit the 60, as I don't find it the easiest club to hit, do you hit many heavy or thin shots with it?

Hapless,

Keep pluggin away mate, it'll come... and the feeling will be great when it does.

I went a whole year without breaking 100, then all of a sudden bang out of nowhere i shot 95!!! I wasn't keeping score but knew I was playing well then my brother in-law showed me the card and I couldn't believe it... over the moon.

At present I probly have 3 sub 100's to every two plus 100's.

My next targets are to break 95 at my course and to break 100 on another course. I dont think i'm far off getting my handicap right down as I've shot 40 on both front and back of my course on the twilights through the summer. Aiming to get the handicap below 26 by the end of the year.

Anyway, best of luck and keep at it.

Krokodil.

The 52 is a gap wedge between the PW and SW which is 56. The 60 is used mainly for greenside bunkers, where it's a demon TBH. I can't use it on the grass though, mostly thick shots (take too much turf). I use the 52 for everything from 100 yards in, and it's generally my strongest club.

Driving is my weakest or most erratic area, though my FIR is better than my h'cap level (SS2 stat).

Worst stat for me is penalties per round, normally caused by said erratic driving. Average out at 4 or 5 pens a round.

Keep at it Hapless. I bet you'll break (not brake) 100 soon and it won't be long before you break 90, mate. And 80? Why not?

Re: Braking 100

Turn the trebles into doubles and avoid any disasters and the course will be your oyster. Keep working at it because it is mainly a mental thing this 100 barrier, since I broke it I think I have failed to break it once when I had a bad neck and back and was swinging like a prat but playing for the fun of it. The key to breaking 100 is not the pars you make like most think it is the trebles you don't as by the sounds of it on any given hole you are capable of making a par so just prevent any disasters and the pars will sort themselves out. most importantly don't worry about it.

Minty.

I got lumbered with a h'cap of 24. Even with my average gross score being 108.

You're shooting sub 100's and hoping to get down to 26!!

Having said that, I think they looked at 3 cards and over that 3 cards the ecclectic best was 16 over par!

Hapless, I still have very little understanding of the handicap system but I've played with some pretty decent golfers and held my own with very little or no adjustment.

I think its my lack of competitions holding me back but that'll change soon as i'm looking to play in all the forthcoming comps.

Have you ever played a round using the 17 degree off the tee and leaving the big stuff in the locker room?

Re: Braking 100

Being a nomad i've got 5 or 6 courses that i rotate and have often carded 100+ rounds on some of them ,especially when the courses were new to me .But as i've collected cards from each course i have been able to see where i'm strong and weak.
For me it all came down to reflection and course management, as i mid handicapper i accepted that during any one round i would probably badly mis hit perhaps 6 shots ,some 3 putts, etc. Accept them and move on after making them. Look at the score index , on the harder holes play for a bogey(stroke index 1,all but a scratch player would receive shots here ) so trying to par it could easily wreck a card. As much as we all want to pull off that great shot and do it in style, play the percentages .To break 100 you have 27 shots to fritter away . Go through the card and choose where to use them.
In most cases when i have broke 100 i've done it with a sub 90 round :D

Re: Braking 100

I've said it a number of times on here, but if you treat each hole as a par five and try and shoot level 5's you won't go far wrong. Level 5's gives you 90, and so there is a 10 shot cushion for you. Look to make good on the shorter holes and then try and play within yourself on longer par 4's and fives. If you hit a bad shot, don't try and play a low percentage shot but get the ball in play with the idea of geeting on for 3 and 2 putting. Even a six can be offset with a 4 on a par 3.

You may find it makes you less hung up about trying to hit perfect shots all the time. Don't worry too much about your score and just keep in your head how close to level 5's you are and let the rest take care of itself

Re: Braking 100

The 17 is a tough one. Realistically I can play reasonably well on occasions with the 20, and will generally out drive the driver on percentage terms. But the temptation to hit the big stick is just too much, as when it's working I can get 250 plus out of it. The 20 only gives me 200 at best.

I think I've answered my own question here. Leave the big stick at home (ouch, how will the ego cope!), and only use the 20 off the tee.

I think I need to concentrate on lay up distances, and not just go for length on the drives. As for that damn 16th though!! That's another story.

I'll get off your couch now!!

Shanker.

I play at East Horton, but have done Fleming Park, Botley, Bramshaw, New Forest, and some years ago Queens Park and Kings Park in Bornemouth.
You must mean Queen's and Meyrick? Maybe the names have changed. Anyway, get down to the Bournemouth area. Tremendous courses. Parkstone, Ferndown, Broadstone, Isle of Purbeck. You'll love them.

Right, on your next round, leave the score killer in the bag and see how you do with the more accurate woods-as soon as the numbers come tumbling down your ego will forget all about the driver!
