I was having an interesting conversation with a chap at the course last night and thought I'd pose the same question on here, just to see the forums view(s).

If you look at the brands in golf (TaylorMade, Ping, Srixon, Titleist, etc, etc), they all have staff players representing their brand and in some cases helping with R&D.

Here's the point we were discussing. Are certain staff players given priority within the same brand (Tiger Woods will obviously have more clout than say Stewart Cink at Nike)?

The example is Rickie Fowler and Rory Mcilroy.

Who is worth more to Titleist?

Rickie for the American market? or Rory for being a major winner?

Discuss.

I think they're equally valuable to the brand, even though Rickie hasn't had a win on tour, never mind a major.

Rory, while (IMHO) the better player, doesn't have that brash, cocky vibe that Americans seem to love.

Rory caters to the traditionalists, Rickie to the more progressive player.

Both make Titleist millions.

I would say Rory would, the americans love him out there and he wheres the hat as someone said earliar. Rickie Fowler you would associate more with puma due to the gear he wears.

I would imagine all the pros get a decent amount of stuff and time in the testing labs depending on what they want. Just the adverts are always going to be for major winners or top ten players in general. Look at last years open champion, wouldnt of been near a tv advert until he won that.

Is Donald using a R11 in an all mizuno bag? Surely that doesn't look good for mizuno drivers... I'm surprised he's allowed to do it.

I used to compete in skiing and we were not even allowed to touch gears from manufacturers other than our sponsors.

He has had the R11 since he won the World Matchplay in Arizona. I believe its due to players have contracts for different things. Irons, Drivers + woods, Putters, Balls and Clothing all come under different agreements. Obviously a lot of people play Titleist balls yet dont have any other titleist equipment.

Got to be Mcilroy I'd say. Major winner and the yanks love him after what happened at the masters and then the US open.

tbh, I didn't even realised Fowler used Titliest clubs, but I did know Mcilroy does !!

Which is why the sceptic in me felt that the white R11 was not to help alignment but rather so as it was obvious who was using Taylormade clubs despite not wearing the name.

Skiers and cricketers in particualr have for years been using other manufacturers' equipment but branded with their main sponsor's stickers.

I guess it's harder with golf clubs' physical designs being so different

I think a lot of pros are only contracted to irons these days as a lot of them seem to have mix and match woods. A lot have old favourite 3 and 5 woods in particular from a few years back that they love and so won't change irrespective of which make they are playing with now

Ricky looks good on a photo and rory is a good advert for photoshop or at least the special effects guy from an american werewolf in london (part changed).

isnt Rory's cap a Jumeirah ?

Eh? That would be the name of a property company (I think) in Dubai.

Swanky hotel chain. Own the Burj and three or four other hotels in Dubai, and hotels in London, New York and other such places.

Always good to see famous sportsmen carrying the brands that appeal to the masses. :o :D

Have you seen how many have private jet company stuff on them?

You could afford to stay for a night or two at a hotel, but I think the jet might be out of reach.
