bogey hole

I've got 3 at my course, the 6th as Homer mentioned and the 17th are nasty par 3s but I'm gonna nominate the 7th. 400yd par with, very slight dogleft left with a ditch running accross the fairway at about 230-240 that I can't carry but can reach. I usually go with a hybrid off the tee unless it's really wet or into a strong wind. Anything too far left, even left of the fairway leaves you blocked out from the green by a large tree but I'd give my right arm for that issue. On the right there is a half-dead tree at about 190yds which I usually manage to hit towards. Even if you're not blocked by that tree, on the edge of the ditch there is another large tree blocking the green. If you could drive the ditch you have to hit a draw because anything straight ends up in the right rough blocked by yet another big tree. Once you're over the ditch there is an environmental area running down the left side waiting to catch a wayward shot. The green has a pretty severe back to front, right to left slope making putts a little tricky.

Usually I transpire to make at least a double with the odd treble thrown in for good measure. Two of my best rounds of the year have contained a double (gross 74) and a treble (gross 76) on the 7th.

Having said all that, my last two rounds I have played the 6th 7th and 17th in a combined total of 1 under so maybe things are looking up - at least until the next comp.

Of course you can do what I do and hit a big hook off the tee down the 3rd and leave a clear line in. The only issue then is taking on the environmental area. If you hit it cleanly more often or not its not that big a carry and you still have the option of a mid iron over the left hand oak and a pitch on. From your favourite position right, have a look at going down the 8th and then playing on. I tried that in the medal but wimped out and didn't take enough to clear the greenside trap on the left of the 8th green. If you take 8-9 though it should leave a good line in. Won't be any worse than making 6 or 7 the conventional route

Only hole on the course I am not keen on is the 2nd. In order for the club to buy the course they had to sell off some land that included part of the original 2nd hole. The new hole has a blind tee shot, and the green is surrounded by large trees that cut out the light, and make it a dank place in winter. Not a difficult hole, but the least memorable one on the course.

The hole that ruins a lot of my rounds is the 5th, which has a right angle dogleg at about 200 yards, and a ditch that stops you trying to cut off the corner. You only need a long iron or hybrid off the tee, but you normally need the same sort of club in to a very difficult green to hit. No bunkers around the green, but it is very narrow and slopes from front to back and left to right. Plays easier in the winter, but in the summer very difficult to two putt. Usually plays the hardest hole on the course and is only 400 yards.

Oh how well I remember this SOB.............
That green sucks!

Our 17th is a 405 yd par 4 dogleg Right Uphill - I think I've only parred it about a dozen times in 5 years.

Not being able to hit my drives 250+ uphill I am invariably short of the dogleg and consequently if I have an open shot I will be over to the left leaving a very long iron/fairway wood to the green. Problem is the green is protected by a large pond in front with 2 oak trees either side of the pond. Its a killer when you are tiring towards the end of a round.

The 13th at my place, it is one of the shortest holes on the course around 320m but position is the play here anything left of centre is blocked from the green and means leaving it hanging out over really deep rough hoping for a draw.

Our 13th is only 119 yards in length. There is someone on here who just collapses at this hole for some reason. He's a very steady golfer, a MUCH better golfer than his handicap suggests and has a great looking swing.

To me this backs up my theory that bogey holes are 99% mental blocks!

(not going to out you Scott) ;)
