Good morning all,

I've got general admission tickets to the Thursday & Friday along with 18th green grandstand tickets for both days. While I watch a lot of golf on TV, this will be the first time I will attend a tournament live.

Does anyone who has been to Wentworth before have any tips and advise for getting the most out of my two days? Top spots to try and watch from etc.?

Many thanks in advance

Luke

No tip for actually being at Wentworth but a general tip for a tournament. If you intend following a group, don't follow one of the really big boys. You will barely see anything, it becomes a scrum. Find a spot on a hole, elbows out, watch a few groups go through. Mix it up, stand behind the tee on a par 5, watch them smash the life out of a ball. Stand at the green for a par 3, stand at a landing zone on a par 4, to watch them play their approach shots.

Comfy shoes, wear your comfiest shoes (y)

When we went we followed a group for a couple of holes, stopped for a couple of groups then followed a group etc etc..to see the whole course then picked some vantage points.

Been several times, plenty of options available, I like to get behind the flag on the 2nd hole (par3) watch a few groups go through, then follow a particular group for a few holes.

The big names will have huge numbers following them, so choose a hole, get in position and wait, trying to see what is going on through crowds 9 deep is no fun.

The 17th is a good hole to get behind, a great range of approach shots can be viewed.
And of course, if you can get into the 18th grandstand, you can see the groups come home plus other action on the screens

There is only 1 rule, you must visit the yum yum girls in their van for a bacon butty, they’ll be near the entrance

Enjoy

We used to go a few years ago. Always liked standing behind the 2nd. Then around 8/11 ? ( memory struggling here) tee. A couple of times, we walked the course backwards, it allows you to stop at a hole ,get a good viewing place, and wait for the ‘name’ to come through. We’ve also gone into the 18th stand early but it’s a bit limiting.

Can’t help with Wentworth but have been to countless tournaments in the uk & Europe.

An obvious one; get hold of a start sheet so that you know who with who and who is following who around.

Our preferred method; watch a few groups on the first tee then pick up a relatively unknown group to follow for a couple of holes. If you then drop that group and wait for a top group to come through, preferably on a signature hole, you will be front row when they catch up with you. Repeat the above process for all 18 holes, giving you a feel for the layout.

As you have grandstand tickets, plonk yourself down for a while to recover/have lunch. Then, knowing the course, you can either repeat the above or flit between preferred holes.

A small back pack for waterproofs & drinks. Include a hat as umbrellas can be unmanageable in big crowds.

It’s a long, tiring day. No need to rush round, take your time & take rests.

Enjoy!

As other have said, behind par3 2nd is a good spot. Greens 6 & 11 with tee 7aren't far apart. Greens 7 & 10 plus tee 11 are also close together. By green 14 is also good as that's where they usually win a car for a HIO.

Get a programme to see who goes when. Then go to a viewpoint and watch folk until your chosen group to come past. Then follow. And repeat for others.

When weve gone, our usual route is walk down 1, sit behind 2 for a bit, walk down 4/5/6, wait by 6/11, miss 7-10, walk up 12/13, wait by 14, then walk the final four holes

Never bothered with a start sheet. Just get the DPWT app. As well as start times and standings, it will tell you, updated in real time, who is on every hole, and exactly where on the course any of your favourite golfers you’re wanting to follow are.

I’ve had my most enjoyable days at Wentworth when following some of the lesser names, placing a few bets on who will win each group, and trying to follow them all the way round. There is almost zero point trying to follow the big names, you’ll be in crowds about 10 deep.

Maybe pick a group with a big hitter for added entertainment.

I followed Alvaro Quiros once and he left a putt short, downhill on the 3rd. He could not believe it, and he preceded to smash every putt about 6ft past for the remainder of the round, he was venting about this putt on the 3rd hole for most of his round

Don’t pick up any ball, anywhere (even if you’re convinced it’s from the last monthly medal)
Be aware of stewards/marshals as they (silently) try to manage spectator crossings or if you’re walking up someway behind a group about to play and they want you to pause in place (they can’t really call out to get your attention to stop)
If you end up in a corporate tent etc near players, keep the noise down. Just cos you’re not watching doesn’t mean they dont hear you all drinking/chatting about the free nosh!

If a player tosses a ball to you, wipe it on your shorts for a quick clean and hand it back to him ;)

I did enjoy standing around 18th - it’s a classic risk/reward hole with most trying to hit the green over water from a long distance. The green complex itself is very tricky, no two putts are alike even on the same line - makes it fun to watch 🙃

I wasn’t in the stands, there is enough space on the right side of the green for spectators, with a bit of time and elbow grease you can be in a prime spot 😂
