i've always been of the opinion that i'd be better off with cavity back irons,if they are designed to be easier to hit and aimed at higher handicap players then surely a low handicap player can play even better with them than say a hard to hit iron.

obviously that is not the case,i know bladed irons are better for shot shaping etc and i'm now starting to think that maybe its worth while giving them a shot as my iron play is diabolical to say the least.

what do you think?the irons i currently use are callaway x-14's fitted with s300 shafts,i'm wondering if its worth while going for a set of irons and being fitted for them...get some kind of deal.i really believe this is what is holding me back,my iron play is getting me down.

Doesn't have to be blades. Players irons sit nicely in between. I personally cant stand looking down at a club that has either a chunky top line or loads of offset.
Plenty of sets of players irons out there.

I don't ing think that having 'diabolical iron play' is a sound basis for wanting the ability to shape shots!

however, I would always agre that 'getting fitted' (properly) is a positive move to understand what's happening, and how your equipement may influence it

Your irons aren't holding you back, your swing is holding you back. Changing to irons that are less forgiving won't improve your swing.
Nothing wrong with using nice shiny forged blades (I do!) but you have to work on your technique as well. If you can't hit a ball with X14's, one of the best cavity back sets ever made, then there is a serious problem you need to address.

Interesting. Are the shafts right (could you play regular). Personally I'm all for making it as easier as possible and so even going back to my TM TP's I've still got a small cavity to help on bad ball striking days.

Are you talking about pure out and out blades. If your irons are that bad then surely a lesson is a cheaper option and then review the situation at the end of the season

Maybe you should tell Lee Westwood that blades are better?

I know I'm a high handicapper but if you got down to 5.3 with the x-14's and are now having issues with iron play I'd say something more fundamental is wrong. On saying that I have had a pop with blades and although bad shot punished not only were the ball went but also my hands (ouch) a good strike with them feels so nice.

I have more fun with the MP-57s than the soleless cheap SGI irons I had before. Thats what golf is mainly about, the feeling you get from a good swing.

FWIW! If you are 'having problems with your iron play' with X14s, then blades ain't going to help you in the short term. They quite possibly could help identify/feedback your misses though. The 'forgiveness' of the X14s tends to hide off centre misses.

You didn't actually say what the 'problems' were either. If it was shaping, then blades could well help, but you may, initially, have ball-strike issues.

There are indeed 'players' irons that fiy between blades and GI clubs. And I know a 4-capper who is quite happy still playing (and shaping) the MX23s he bought s a 22-capper!

Best way is to try for yourself! More exonomic to borrow than buy though!

I may be wrong, but hasn't westwood gone abck to Ping i20's or was that just a rumour? If he has I think that answers your question

i agree that if i'm having problems with x-14s then surely its going to get worse with blades or better players clubs but you never know.

i fancy trying stiffer shafts to see how i'd get on,everything is left with the irons and its frustrating.its a never ending draw.....whether its shaft related or swing related then i don't know.my driver for instance rarely has this never ending draw, the shaft is a stiff shaft on the driver but a bit stiffer than normal.

the shafts on the irons are s300's and i feel they are fine but i was watching a set of irons on ebay that were fitted with x100's and thought they'd be worth trying...and if they didn't work i could sell them on.

Rather than bounce about trying various clubs why not get a fitting. That way you'll get to try lots of iron/shaft combos and would save yourself having to simply settle for something. If you are not planning on buying new then be upfront and simply pay for a fitting session. It would save you a lot of tinkering. You never know, you may actually benifit with a softer shaft!

Why not invest in a lesson to find out "where you are" with your swing.

It's the only logical move i.m.o.

My mate Paul plays with X14s (DG/Stiff) and he gives his irons a good old whack, although he's inconsistent directionally, he's not a bad iron player and swears by these clubs. I also know an ex Pro (retired, aged late 70s, good player, plays off about 5-6) also with X-14s. Two contrasting swings and playing styles, both rate the X14s so much they can't be parted with them after all these years.

Get a lesson. If your clubs are not right, change them, of course. Or have them banged about a bit!!

My opinion, FWIW...

1. Looking at the X-14s, there is some offset designed to square the club better. You are a low handicapper so squaring may not be an issue thus at contact the club could be starting the ball more left than say with a club with lesser offset.

2. Check the lie in case the heel is digging in, turning the ball over.

3. I think the S300 isn't strong enough. Look for X100 or PX 6.5.

4. Get a decent Trackman, Flightscope, GC2, etc. ball stats to understand what's going on with current clubs.

5. Go to a trusted pro to see if it's something bang obviously wrong with your swing.

6. Do all of the above, some or none! ;)

There are tour players using Titleist AP2s and there is at least 1 player using AP1s.

As others have said, if your iron play is awful, I'd look at your swing rather than get a less forgiving club

See if you can borrow a set of blades off a friend to try them out. When I bought my last irons they had a set of Nike VR TW's on special for £350 and I just had to try them as I was very tempted. 1/2 an hour on the range convinced me that although very nice, blades were not for me so I plumbed for the Cobra S2 forged on offer with Clubhouse Golf Direct at £299 and haven't regretted it as they are the best irons I've used, offering the perfect gap between game improvement and better players irons.
