I always thought I was a better ball striker than my handicap suggested, due to a poor short game. For the last couple of years I’ve been using Talyormade Muscle Cavity irons and hitting them reasonably well. The other week I got into conversation with the pro at my local range and asked him what he thought about the irons. He said they were OK but that I may benefit from a bit more help from the 4 & 5 irons. Having had a bee firmly placed in my bonnet I immediately looked around and liked the look of the Mizuno MP53 irons in the shop. Unfortunately, the second hand set was only 5 to PW so I found & bought a set, 3 to PW on Ebay. Not the most scientific approach but they looked so nice & I thought I could easily get my money back if I didn’t get on with them.
I took them onto the course today for the first time. What a revelation! So easy to hit, I can even hit the 3 iron and what I like is that even the ones you don’t catch go pretty well. They have a pronounced cavity right down to the 7 iron but don’t launch mega high like some cavity clubs. I’ve never felt more confident standing over a shot, you just feel as if you can’t miss, although, to be fair, I did a couple of times.
There was a bit of wind out there and I even found I could shape the ball pretty well, holding it up in a left to right wind, which is normally my hardest shot. Don’t know why I didn’t think of this years ago, very happy and sure it’s going to improve my game.
