I always thought I was a better ball striker than my handicap suggested, due to a poor short game. For the last couple of years I’ve been using Talyormade Muscle Cavity irons and hitting them reasonably well. The other week I got into conversation with the pro at my local range and asked him what he thought about the irons. He said they were OK but that I may benefit from a bit more help from the 4 & 5 irons. Having had a bee firmly placed in my bonnet I immediately looked around and liked the look of the Mizuno MP53 irons in the shop. Unfortunately, the second hand set was only 5 to PW so I found & bought a set, 3 to PW on Ebay. Not the most scientific approach but they looked so nice & I thought I could easily get my money back if I didn’t get on with them.

I took them onto the course today for the first time. What a revelation! So easy to hit, I can even hit the 3 iron and what I like is that even the ones you don’t catch go pretty well. They have a pronounced cavity right down to the 7 iron but don’t launch mega high like some cavity clubs. I’ve never felt more confident standing over a shot, you just feel as if you can’t miss, although, to be fair, I did a couple of times.

There was a bit of wind out there and I even found I could shape the ball pretty well, holding it up in a left to right wind, which is normally my hardest shot. Don’t know why I didn’t think of this years ago, very happy and sure it’s going to improve my game.

I suppose it depends on how fast your swing speed is , the faster the speed the less you need cavity backed clubs , at leat that's how I imagine it works.
i have a slow swing speed and so need all the help I can get!

Who needs them? Depends who you ask

I have MP63's and hit them well enough for a muscle back, evidenced by the 4 iron I hit into our SI 1 par 4 from the fairway at the weekend.

Do I need them? Of course not! Do I like them to play the game with? Oh yes :D

I completely understand the benefits of cavity backs but struggle to grasp what advantage blades / mb gives. People say "workability" but if you hit a cb from the inside with the face closed to the swingpath you get a draw & vice versa. I think all but the very best players would benefit from the extra help peripheral weighting gives. The MP 53s have been a revelation. See how they perform in my HowdidIdo Morocco challenge this afternoon.

Thing is though, through design, a GI iron will try and straighten out a ball flight. 'Player' irons, again through design won't.

I'm not saying you can't draw or fade GI irons, because, obviously, people can. It is easier however to shape a ball with a 'players' club.

Purely through design.

I have had it in my head since I was a kid that it is easier to strike a ball solid with a full lump of metal than a lump of metal with a piece missing in the back of it!

old habits die hard.

I have huge difficulty with hybrids, hitting them too high into the wind. The way I can hit the 3 & 4 irons gives me a lot of confidence. We'll see!

Good luck and let us know how you get on. I have the MP53s and they are lovely clubs.

Some things are counter intuitive! Does the same apply to Drivers with thin faces? Or rounded faces being more likely to hit straight? Or to to get the ball up from a bunker, you have to hit down?

you cant tell the thickness of a driver face just by looking at it! bulge and roll faces don't thrill me with the thought of straight shots. the opposite in fact!

as far as hitting down goes. someone in 09 told me to hit down to make the ball go up. iv been doing that ever since. only last Saturday have I managed to hit 5 and 6 irons without taking a divot. its as much of a light bulb moment to me as the hitting down thing.

i went from a set of MP62 Mback irons to GI JPXpro. yes these are harder to shape, but what's wrong with long and straight and easier to hit.
