Blade / Cavity

What do you prefer ??

I suppose this has been asked a million times before ..

What really are the Benefits ? and what are the disadvantages of blades ? Or is it simply down to personal preference

Re: Blade / Cavity

Cavity - Easier to hit, much more forgiving on off centre hits, more weight giving more confidence perhaps. However, harder to work the ball with perhaps, and less feedback on just how you have struck the shot.

Blades/Players irons - harder to hit well, but they tell you when you dont, which I feel helps in fine-tuning your strike. Easier to work from left to right, and a damn site more georgeous to look down at.

I went from Zing2's for 12 years, to AP2's which took me down to Single figures finally, and now have Titleist CB's, which are no harder to hit, and simply divine to look at :D

Would I go back to Cavity Backed ? Hell no........

Re: Blade / Cavity

Blades are for the golfer who is disappointed when the shot they just made didn't bend around the tree in front of them and land neatly on the green.

Cavity are for the rest of us - the people who enjoy the game and get a kick when a beautifully struck, nicely flighted 6 iron lands smack in the middle of the green but don't want to make it harder than it alreay is!

Re: Blade / Cavity

I play with mx 17s and Ive used them for the last 3 years, but whenever I see a set of mx 300s I know there the club that Im after,I hit the 17s realley well, and its always in the back of my mind I might be moving too fast to make the change in buying the 300

Re: Blade / Cavity

Blades for me, have cavity backs in the bag but towards the end of the year I will hopefully have blades :D
Blades are the best because:
-they feel damn well great when hit out of the centre
-look good in the bag and at address
-easier to discover faults
-makes you seem really good
-easy to shape shots with them

Re: Blade / Cavity

Done both, and I know that unless you are a seriously good ball striker blades will not be in your bag for long. I have a combo set, 8i and down are blades, 7i and up are cavities.
If you aren't off low single digits, blades will not help your game. They are played for vanity, not sanity.

I don't believe in the personal preference theory, unless you are a really good iron player. I've played with all sorts and find that the best shots you'll ever play will be with bladed clubs. However, since the purpose of a cavity-backed club is to "even out" your chances of still hitting a half decent ball without peaching it out the middle, cavity irons are surely the winner for everyday mid and high h'cap players.

I've been using a conventional cavity backed set for the last year and am trying a set of ultra game improvement irons to see if there is anything to be gained by going "the other way". So far, the results are encouraging. I don't like the feel of them and as yet I've seen a 0% improvement in accuracy, BUT they are stupidly easy to hit and unbelievably consistent in distance and trajectory.

I haven't hit a horror shot yet (and I've hit hundreds of balls already) - I couldn't say that about my old set, and certainly never when I had a set of blades (and played off a lower h'cap)

Great Reply...... ;)

I for one can relate to this issue.....Although i didn't play full blades they were Players cavity backs as the market calls them......Minimal offset thin top lines and small heads......Beautiful to look at and while there lethal in the hands of someone that can tame them they just weren't for me right now...I played them for 3 months but iv since switched to the New Cobra S2's and i love them....Long Straight and accurate with a nice helping of offset and a midsize head......Some people dont like the look of them but iv grown to love them.....Also im far more consistent with them and even though they are very forgiving they still let you know when you've caught one off the extremities of the face......Oh and there nowhere near the shovels on sticks that some G.I Irons look like.

Re: Blade / Cavity

There's only a handful of true blades on the market now. Even most of the Tour Pros play "players" cavity-backs now. Blades have to be struck just right. If you do then yes you get great feel and feedback. But I'd do that maybe 2 out of 10 times. The other 8 will go nowhere.

Re: Blade / Cavity

Blades, blades, blades. Gorgeous and have a thin top line!

Psssssssst....Hey Pete......just to give you the heads up....You aint playing blades mate....There Players cavity backs.......

If you want a proper set of wilson blades you'll need these..... ;) ;)

the options were cavity backs or blades. I hate 'fat' clubs so chose blades. Not once did i mention that i had blades

Re: Blade / Cavity

I prefer the look of a blade but understand the benefits of cavity backs.

That's why progressive sets are good.

As I've said quite a few times before, I don't hold with the argument that blades are only for very low single figure players. As the handicap only tells you how many shots you should take in total, not how well you hit your irons.

But equally, and MUCH more importantly, cavity's are not just for duffers.

As Murph says - "They (blades) are played for vanity, not sanity"
